Ever since I was a little girl I dreamt about being on the Indianettes dance team. Dancing has been a part of my life from the age of four up until now. When I was younger I was not the best dancer but I loved it, and my mom already paid for my classes so i was kind of stuck doing it anyways. My eighth grade year I was preparing to tryout for the Indianettes, I was stretching, working on my technique, and working on my jumps and turns. It turns out that the old coach Sheri Bradley quit and the Indianettes had a new fairly inexperienced coach named MariAnn Barfus. I wasn't very confident about making the team. Long story short, I ended up making it along with Jaidyn Harris, Hannah Hyde, Daphnie Colpron, Carson Davis, Becca Osterhout, Mechelle…

The Cherokee is spread out over what are currently Kentucky, West Virginia, North and South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee. The people called themselves Ani Yunwiya, which means “the principal people,” and were the largest single tribe in the south. The name Cherokee was given to them by other Indian tribes and meant “people who speak another language.” In the 16th century, there were about 25,000 Cherokee. From 1684 to 1835 white settlers moved through their lands. The Eastern Band of Cherokee is descended from those who fled to the mountains to avoid relocation during the “trail of tears.”…

Music is a form of expression. It is a way of communicating an idea and telling a story. But music can be used in various ways. Throughout my life, I’ve found the power of music within my passion for dance. I enjoy finding different instrumental pieces and discovering how I can create movement based on them. However, my favorite part about creating choreography is letting myself go and using my experience in theatre to understand the power of conveying a story. I decided to follow this passion when we were assigned to create a creative assignment based off of one of the topics we’ve covered this year in World History Class. I have always been really interested in change and learning about how an individual is able to go against society to…

West African Dance originated in the region known as West Africa which consists of 18 countries; including Niger, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Nigeria. Stereotypes of African dancing were created in Europe and the Americas that even most westernized Africans began to accept, but the history of African dance dates back more than 3,000 years ago. Scholars have found drawings of people dancing on the walls of rocks in countries like Algeria and Egypt. This shows how important dancing was to the early humans. The earliest official records of African Dancing go back to fifteenth century when France and Britain controlled most of Western Africa. Europeans landed on the Guinea coast in the mid fifteenth century when trade flourished…

Dance, movements orchestrated with music, to express the way you feel. The first forms of dance came around in 6000 B.C, originating from India. The Hindu dance Gods Krishnu Shiva is the most common God portrayed through dance, especially found in Bharata Natyam and Nyark Sharky, also known as Belly Dance. In Southeast India, it is normal as a young female to learn the ways of Bharata Natyam. Bharata Natyam is widely known for its sculpturesque poses and art of story telling, mostly performed only by females, but as time progressed it is accepted by both sexes. The dances illustrate a deep devotion to the deities; dancers are married to the deity. Devadasi also known as temple dancers usually illustrated their devotion to the Gods the most, performing "in front" of the Gods, or at festivals in honor of them. Bharata Natyam captures the true meaning of dance drama, the dance routines tell a story, creating theatrical unity and wholeness in the meditative mind.…

When being asked what would be taken from me if I could no longer dance I had to think for a while. I had to rearrange the question and ask myself “what does dance mean to you, and how does it affect you?” It honestly not something I think about much so it actually was a bit hard trying to put all the emotions that this prompt evoked in words. If I was no longer in a position where I could freely dance multiple things would be taken away from me. Initially my identity. I also feel as if this situation would take away my happiness. Last but not least if dance wasn’t a part of my life anymore it would take away my joy.…
