I will organize my work around the “Introduction to production” course I teach at Point Blank College. It is a “music technology” course that is recognised by the British educational system (NOCN level 2). The key aims of the course consist in: -Guiding students to acquire basic compositional techniques and develop their personal career. -Developing the student’s self motivation that will allow them to integrate the music industry I have learnt my skills in a professional environment and this experience inevitably shaped the “pragmatic” style of teaching I use. Being taught by professionals in activity rather than scholar’s means I had to go and get the knowledge I needed by myself. I try to convey this self-motivation to my students through a friendly and “professional” attitude. I believe this behaviour creates an enjoyable experience. John Dewey argues that providing the student with enjoyable learning experiences motivates them to continue learning; this motivation matters just as much as the knowledge that is learned (38). I agree with this precept and I want my teaching to be inspiring both in the creative domain and the personal development domain. I think it is important to convey the sense of passion first, method second and business last. It is essential not to waste the student’s time and not to put them off learning the subject by teaching things that are not practical so I always set the assignments according to each student’s preferred style of music. I was recently given the privilege of playing in the pit orchestra for the musical at my high school. I loved the experience of meeting other members of the music department, sharing many cookies. Challenging myself by playing music that I didn’t usually played exposed me to different music that went from five sharps to one flat. I went from the girl who was terrified of speaking her mind to someone who can easily give speeches in front of people and can lead a clarinet section of 20 people. Being responsible for 19 other people is a challenge that freshman me would never have been able to do, and in this way, band has helped me grow into both the leader and the person that I am today. However, band didn’t just help me grow, it made me happy. My memories of band are some of the happiest memories of my life. Memories ranging from praying to all the band gods above for a water break or possibly a nice cloud to shade us from the evil sun to marching and winning sweepstakes at our very first competition and crying our tears of happiness together. Although I can’t answer all the questions about how I’ll do it, I’m certain that I want to make a difference in the world. Barnard’s atmosphere and its joint theater program are the main factors that have influenced me to apply. Academically, Barnard is known for its intimate learning environment. I’ve spent my entire life going from one close-knit group to the next. Whether it was Taekwondo, Dance, Theater, or The Commonwealth Governor’s School, each of those groups were empowering, nurturing, and noble in their own individual ways. Barnard embodies all of those qualities, which is what I find attractive. This year I decided to interview Mrs. Jackie Hammers, the choral director of our Jr. High School. I have a love for music and she was a very inspirational teacher when I was younger, so I felt the need to ask her about her job. Mrs. Hammers is like I said a music teacher, but to be more direct she teaches 7th grade general music and is the choral or vocal music director at the school. Having grown up in a rural community in Newfoundland and Labrador, I was taught by only three different teachers between grades kindergarten and grade six, in a multi-grade school structure. These teachers had to do everything from providing canteen services to teaching physical education. I did not have the opportunity to have a music program until I was bussed to another community for junior high. I immediately joined the band program and was given a clarinet to play. In my high school a new computer program was implemented by the initiative of our principal. Through this program, I developed a new area of interest.
