Dante's Inferno
In Dante Alighieri’s The Divine Comedy, Dante is introduced as a man of sin who has strayed from the path of God. With assistance from Virgil, Dante is forgiven for his sins and achieves enlightenment as he journeys through Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven. Throughout The Divine Comedy, Dante shows intellectual and moral progress as he rids himself of his sin and grows closer to God through his experiences in the afterlife, specifically as he sees how sinners in Hell are punished, encounters spirits in Purgatory who kept God waiting in life, and has a personal experience with God in Heaven.
