In the poem “The Inferno” by Dante Alighieri, there are many themes throughout the adventures that Dante encounters. The Inferno is used by Dante to show the theme of God's justice and shows through the punishments that the sinners are given, which Dante encounters. Firstly, If an individual did not commit a sin when they were alive, they will still be put in hell if they are not christian or if they were born before Christ. Next, punishments are based off of the sin that people committed when they were alive, even if their punishment is the complete opposite of what they did in the real world. Each circle was unique in the kind of sinner that is put there. A person’s behaviour and ultimate sin distinguished whether the person went into the first circle of hell, second circle, third and so on. In the first circle of hell, Limbo, there are non Christians who were never baptized and the ones who were born before Christ. The people in this circle did not do anything wrong, but got put in hell because they did not know Jesus Christ. Dante solves this by keeping them all in hell, but giving them a painless fate, one where they are cannot come into the light of God, yet where they are not tormented. “Their only pain is that they have no hope.: (49). Put in Context “ They are born without the light of Christ's revelation, and, therefore, they cannot some into the light of God, but they are not tormented. Their only pain is that they have no hope…No tortured wailing rose to greet us here but sounds of sighing rose from every side, sending a tremor through the timeless air”(50. 25-29). This shows God's justice towards the sinners when they don't follow his way because even though they did nothing wrong, they still go to hell.
