One of the biggest issues with crime analysis is the dark figure of crime. The dark figure of crime has to be taken into account because it will tamper with the data. This causes the data not to reflect crime accurately. If the criminal commits more than one crime, the UCR also only lists the most severe crime (FBI-Uniform Crime Report, 2011, para. 1). In other words, all crime data is not recorded.
In addition, another reason is the UCR is data reported by agencies and agencies does not always report crime data. With that in consideration, the UCR has great data but a crime analysis needs to remember that UCR does not account for all crimes. Rape crimes often goes unreported, therefore, rape data is not bias.
Why
I believe this is a challenge because not all data is accounted for and that makes it hard to give an accurate number. Therefore, dark figure in crime makes it hard to find a valid source. I do think the UCR is a valid source and significant to research. In other words, you have to know your source and how accurate is the data and take in account dark figure in crime and the effect on the data and research. To add, there …show more content…
These are two very significant challenges that we face every day in research. Media has been always been an issue and I feel like that issue has grown in the past few years. The media can easily cause mass hysteria and I believe that the media has been doing a great job of lately. For an example, the media has ignited a fire against race and police enforcement and this is dangerous. The British government may have very well be telling the truth to what they believe but the data can be faulty due to dark figure of crime as mentioned
