A novel would be meaningless without theme. The theme is what the author intends the reader to understand through the reading of the novel. Mark Zusak in The Book Thief , encompasses the use of imagery , diction , tone , syntax and detail all to portray theme of the novel. Zusak employs the theme that words are powerful , they can trigger violence but also constitute peace. The theme that words are powerful is illuminated throughout the novel. For example , in Max’s dream Hitler through just the use of words convinces the entire nation of Germany to turn against Max. Another prime example of the power of words is expressed through Max’s novel “The Word Shaker”. In this short story Max describes the power of words , and also reiterates that…
But the question rises why London has been the centre for mystery in many of these gothic fictions. The answer lies in the mindset of an era clouded by construction, smoke and novelty – the Victorian era. London is even to date, a world within its own and during the Victorian era, London was a source of major construction and a source continuous development of certain areas and industries. New development and affluent buildings went hand in hand with the overcrowded slums of London where the worst living conditions possible manifested within themselves. The Golden age of steam and coal mining also spelled the beginning of pollution which in turn led to a number of social costs. Dehumanisation of work, child labour even at tender ages of 3 and four, to extreme pollution and disease were all costs of the industrial revolution that took over London in the late 19th century. Though the conditions worsened for some, and the middle class grew, the well-off including some in middle class society was ignorant of the suffering in the slums. Thus the London population was not of distinct class and these societal differences brought fourth fear of those of other classes. Another possible explanation for the fear of cities in the Victorian mind especially of London would be the dramatic increase in crime that took over the cities. The pollution in London created thick fogs that…
In the beginning of the story he finds out that he has made a mistake in joining the army he’s scared out of his mind. He kept dreaming about times where he was safe or at home with his parents. He envisions the future of him being alive and having war buddies and talking about his war experiences with them. He wasn’t just scared of dying, he’s also scared of fear itself, ha, that’s ironic isn’t it. He wants to share with his parents all the details of his experiences but he doesn’t want to tell them how scared he was so they would be proud of him.…

Many themes arise throughout the novel Motherless Brooklyn by Jonathan Lethem. One of the main themes which arise is the theme of Bildungsroman, which shows a sense of growth and development. It is a genre that depicts a youth who struggles toward maturity, forming a worldview or philosophy of life and leaving behind the concerns of adolescence. There is a clear sense that the character takes a series of formative steps towards adulthood and some kind of achievement. This can clearly be associated with the protagonist of the novel Lionel Essrog.…
The animated television show titled "Batman and Beyond - Spellbound," shows interesting themes that deal with the philosophy of mind. These themes include hallucinations, the dream argument, and direct and indirect realism. In this episode the antagonist, Dr. Ira Billings or Spellbinder, worked as a psychologist for Gotham City High School (Recap, 2016). When he became his persona Spellbinder, he dressed in an orange and black costume and used a "magic eye" to hypnotize students at the high school (Recap, 2016). Under this powerful hypnosis, students experienced vivid hallucinations, which the Spellbinder used to make them commit "robberies" (Recap, 2016). After the students managed to snap out of these hallucinations, they acted as if they were roused from a dream, having no recollection of their actions (Recap, 2016).…
Since the dawn of mass media, there has been an evident change in people’s lives. The global productivity increased due to faster news developments and decreased, for more entertainment gives a society less productivity; nonetheless, there are certain specific pieces of media that have had a massive impact in modern society. It is very important to understand that different types of media have different repercussions in society. As time goes by, said forms in media will also be prone to change because of many factors that exist in the modern world For instance, newspapers have turned people into a morbid and negative society because of the vast amount of deaths and relative “bad” news. This essay will have the focus on film for it is the newer media and most of the world has access to said media. An exemplar is Christopher Nolan’s film The Dark Knight Rises. This modern neo-noire film is the perfect epitome of how media promotes a sense of opinion in cultural values and affects people’s comportment on a micro level.…
The Dark Knight isn’t just your average super hero film. It’s a crime drama where batman actually has to solve a crime and stop the bad guy. “Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight is a haunting film that leaps beyond it’s origins becomes an engrossing tragedy… because of he direction, because of the writing… this film, and to a lesser degree, Iron Man redefine the possibilities of the comic book movie” (Roger Ebert). Roger Ebert gave The Dark Knight a four star rating. The story of this movie, and the comic book in a sense, has a lot of origins from film noir. In this movie batman is on the borderline between hero and vigilante. The Joker (played by the late Heath Ledger) is a “Mephistopheles whose actions are fiendishly designed to pose moral dilemmas for his enemies” (Ebert). In a sense the world of Gotham City is grey rather then black and white. There is one particular scene that, in my opinion has more mise en scene then other parts of the movie. The scene is early in the film and makes sense if you have seen the end, or read the comics. The scene where Jim Gordon (played by Gary Oldman) is talking to Harvey Dent (played by Aaron Eckhart) about meeting Batman (played by Christian Bale) the camera shots of the two in the district attorney’s office give a foreshadowing essence, when you add actual dialogue. When Jim enters the office of Harvey dent the camera tracks Gordon and dent revealing dent’s office. Dent’s office is, in my opinion, somewhat cluttered. There are papers all over his desk and over flowing paper files on the shelf. Seeing the end of the movie a person might think of this scene as cinematic foreshadowing because it shows just how “disorganized” Harvey Dent is early on in the movie. Another mise en scene moment is the background behind Dent’s head. Behind his head there is a glass window that, in most cases, symbolizes an open mind that is open to interpretation. Combining…

Both movies show neo-noir characteristics though both production and story elements. Production elements such as the dark scenes throughout the movie are used to show the contrasting sides to the story. Within both movies it also shows that a friend of the main character dies, and it shows how this may be devastating to the character however they avoid showing emotion or grief as they are determined to finish their quest and do what is right. These characteristics are vital for creating an engaging neo-noir film.…
The opening scenes of Shawshank Redemption highlight the extent to which the prisoners have isolated themselves and compromised their sense of identity. Freedom is a frightening concept for Red, who dreams of being paroled but eventually, struggles to find his place in society after almost forty years in prison. Red identifies Andy as the part of himself who never let go of the idea of freedom.…
I felt The Dark Knight was the most effective in entertaining me as an audience because it showed the collective personalities of people around us in a way that can be easily understood. For example, in this movie the main characters expressed their inner personalities in a form of a shadow. The shadow is irrational, and is the hidden side of a persona, in which it can contradict the way an individual believes himself to be. For instance, Batman assumes he is not as insane as Joker because he does not follow the same morals as Joker. However, Batman is also similar to Joker because; he also wears a mask to hide his identity, and intimidates people so they will follow his rules. Similarly, how joker also hides his identity, to enforce his rules, and morals to a society. Specifically, Batman focuses on the genuine goodness of the whole society, whereas, Joker motivates individual self-interest and altruism. In addition, Harvey Dent’s transformation into Two-Face shows what happens when one becomes the victim of the shadow’s impulses. For example, he has two faces, in which one of his faces is his own persona, and the other is the shadow. Moreover, he is the combination of Batman, and Joker. Overall, The Dark Knight symbolized the internal struggle in which individuals experience with their darker side, which made it successful in entertaining an audience.…
The Invisible Man by H. G. Wells was a very good novel. In this book it follows a man who fails to fit in and is invisible. The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells should be added to the 9th grade curriculum because of the themes, literary value, and how much it would appeal to the age group.…
