Discuss the ways an actor employs performance skills and the elements of Drama to engage an audience and devise ideas, situations and characters for the stage.
An actor uses both performance skills and the elements of drama to engage an audience. The elements of drama and the performance skills used when trying to give an insight into human experience and engage the audience can include the use of tension, space, movement, rhythm, style, focus and symbols. In the process of play building actors use the above to devise ideas, situations and characters for the stage.
The performance skills of an actor are important to the overall scenes and the atmosphere made for the audience. The spine of your performance is really important to get across to the audience and we can do this by the training of performance skills, this will make the actor/actress be able to suit different characters and therefore getting the overall storyline across to the audience. Some performance skills used are Voice, Movement and focus.
An actor must use their voice to portray different characters and bring different atmospheres to the scenes they use. For example if you were playing a goblin you might have a husky voice to convey they mystery and sneakiness of the character and if you were to play an angel you would have a lighter, more heavenly voice to bring across the idea of a heavenly character, or innocence. Different voices can help an actor to get into any character they are given and is crucial for the visual and emotional extent of the script.
The movement and focus of an actor in a play is very important for the overall result and the audience’s perception of the play. Actors/actress’s must use movement to demonstrate different actions and even show emotion through the use of their body or where they are standing. For example an actor playing the part of a older individual could arch their back and create the image of a walking stick with their hands, they could
