if there is a relationship between the data and my investigation. To find out the correlation to my investigation, I have made a survey to give out to high school students. The people that were being surveyed were my classmates within my class, as well as other students within the school. The total amount of students was about 83 students.
To begin, we have to find out what, what does the research world say about the effect of sleep has on adolescents. After some intensive online research, this is the summary of conclusion I have found. First of all, at this time of age, most teenagers in high school suffer sleep deprivation, the condition of not having enough sleep. It is expected for anyone to have a minimum of 8 hours of sleep. However, according to the online research, most adolescents do not tend to meet this minimum requirement. Because of sleep deprivation, students begin to be moody, lack of cognitive ability (the ability of brain that performs things like attention, memory, decision-making, reaction time, and creativity), and lack of academic performance. As an attempt to find out if the information above is correct, I decided to make changes to the survey.
With the survey, I decided to compare three sets of data: Level Focused vs. GPA, Hours of Sleep vs. Level Focused, and Hours of Sleep vs. GPA.To make the math process for convenient, I have decided to convert ranged numbers from my survey questions to single digits. For GPA, I have changed 2.0-2.9 to 2.5, 3.0-3.9 to 3.5, and 4.0+ to 4.2. For hours, I changed 5-8 hours to 6.5 hours, 5 hours or less to 4.5 hours, and 8+ hours to 7.5 hours. To calculate math, I have used the Pearson Correlation Coefficient formula to find r, correlation coefficient and analyze its relationship with the …show more content…
data. What would the “r, correlation coefficient” tell us about the relationship with the data?
A correlation coefficient is a number that ranges between -1 and 1 and is never greater than 1. If the number is between 0 and 1, there is a positive relation. An example of this would be the more hours of sleep you have, the greater gpa you shall have. If the value is between -1 and 0, then it has a negative relation. An example of this would be the fewer hours of sleep you have, the lower gpa you shall have. Lastly, if the value is neither between -1 and 1 but near or at zero, then it has no relation. In our case, that would mean the number of hours of sleep you have does not have an effect with your
gpa.
Now, let's look at the data provided above and see if there is a relation between them. First, we have the number hours and gpa with the correlation coefficient value is -0.0631, level focused and gpa at 0.3006, and hours of sleep and level focused at 0.1301. Based on these results, we see that there is no relation between any of these data. The data shows that there is no effect in a student’s gpa with the number of hours of sleep they receive. I was surprised when I saw these results. I had always thought there was a correlation between the hours you sleep and your GPA. I had found myself at times less focused in class when I get fewer hours of sleep. My level focused, I believe, is around 6/10.I find myself sleepy during class since I only get about 6-7 hours of sleep a night. I see myself understanding the material being taught, but not enough to be assessed on it. Also, since my level focused is not that great, I find myself when listening to lectures not comprehending as well as I hoped. It is like I listen to the teacher’s words in one ear, and flies out the other. Because of that, I saw my test results begin to decline since I do not understand the material. This is probably the case that showed no correlation between the hours of sleep and gpa. As I reflected on this data, I had realized although I did not achieve great exam results, I was still able to maintain a 4.0 gpa. This is probably the case for the high school students in my survey. Although they maintain a good gpa, their exam results probably do not reflect it. This is probably because students turn in class assignments making its points as a shield for their exams. If that is the case, next time, instead of comparing data with the number of hours of sleep and gpa, I should compare number hours of sleep with exam results.
