Dat GPA Vs. Level Focused
For past generations, teachers have been telling students to get enough sleep. Everyone to this point believes that sleep is an important factor to stay focused in class. I myself believe that the more hours of sleep you get, the higher level of focus you will get in class. However, to what extent is this statement true? Would level of focusness in class reflect your grades due to the number of hours of sleep you get? To attempt to do so, I will gather some sort of data and formula to calculate its results. Since I am trying to find a relationship with my data, it would make sense if I would use Pearson's correlation coefficient formula. With the survey, I decided to compare three sets of data: Level Focused vs. GPA, Hours of Sleep vs. Level Focused, and Hours of Sleep vs. GPA.To make the math process for convenient, I have decided to convert ranged numbers from my survey questions to single digits. For GPA, I have changed 2.0-2.9 to 2.5, 3.0-3.9 to 3.5, and 4.0+ to 4.2. For hours, I changed 5-8 hours to 6.5 hours, 5 hours or less to 4.5 hours, and 8+ hours to 7.5 hours. A correlation coefficient is a number that ranges between -1 and 1 and is never greater than 1. If the number is between 0 and 1, there is a positive relation. An example of this would be the more hours of sleep you have, the greater gpa you shall have. If the value is between -1 and 0, then it has a negative relation. An example of this would be the fewer hours of sleep you have, the lower gpa you shall have. Lastly, if the value is neither between -1 and 1 but near or at zero, then it has no relation.     With or without the average amount of sleep needed, it plays a crucial piece in a person’s daily life, impacting their performance and deciding their sleep rhythm. This can be seen in the book, Encyclopedia of Sleep and Dreaming, where it begins to explain how the effects of a full night’s sleep and an all nighter would help a student perform differently; while studying all night is good for immediate memory, those memories would soon be forgotten.     I investigate students attaining higher grades on exams when they receive proper sleep. I discuss 3 possible hypotheses for the reason of this occurrence: 1) more sleep contributes to greater capability in remembering, 2) rest is necessary for the brain to function at its prime, 3) staying awake and studying the night before leaves you with no energy during the actual exam.     Joseph Buckhalt of Auburn University did a research study to find out how sleep affects kids academically. The kids wore an actigraph when they went to bed, which measures quality and sleep duration, the parents were also told to keep a journal of the times their kids went to sleep and what times they woke up. When they came into school they were to report to a specific classroom where there were other sleep measures and cognitive tests done. The results showed the kids that had less sleep throughout the week had significantly lower scores on the cognitive tests and sleep measures. Another study done by Dr. Avi Sadeh of Tel Aviv University, he gave 77 fourth graders and sixth graders random instructions on either to go to be 30 minutes early or 30 minutes late for three days.
