Dating In Middle School
Middle school is a pathway to new opportunities, important information to remember, and a time for new, and different, experiences. When students enter the chaotic world of middle school, many will feel an urge to break free from the chains, restrictions, that the administration has placed upon them. One experience that many middle school students anticipate is the ability to date whomever they choose. This issue is thoroughly debated about within schools and usually concludes to the banning of dating between students. Schools need to allow the right for the students to date because it allows for the practice of an extremely important life skill that some combat with… social interaction. Dating is part of a student’s private life and schools should not be able to restrict anything from a child’s private life. What a student decides to do with their emotions should not have a school’s administration involved. Of course there should be certain boundaries, but not banning dating as a whole. Also, the administration might not even know if anyone is dating because they would have no way of figuring out. Students in middle school are alreading dating, despite the school policy set in place that says to do otherwise. Students are not getting into trouble even though they are dating because it is not causing a distraction to others around them. Because the Milton Hershey School is no longer a gender based school for boys and men, dating will happen since there are girls added to the classrooms. If the administration wants absolutely no dating taking place, they should either make the school gender based as a whole, or genderize classes sp no opposite gender can interact with each other. However, adolescents would lose their friends and many conversations many lack a certain appeal. A gendered school will not be fun for any student because they could never see new people and would be isolated from the opposite gender. However, dating still has many more beneficial factors for students that needs to be learned for the

    In the article, the author describes the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) campaign “Teach Kids, Not Stereotypes” and its goal to “discredit and terminate gender-specific programs in American schools.” The American Civil Liberties Union thinks organizing schools by gender is equivalent to organizing schools by race. Their goal is to terminate all single-sex programs in America, by threatening the schools with expensive lawsuits and investigations. The author spends much of the article discrediting the claims made by the ACLU, saying “race and sex are different, as the Supreme Court has emphasized and as most everyone recognizes” (Sommers, 1). Although I do not agree with the extremity of the arguments made by the ACLU, I believe there are strengths in their reasoning. There are two major critiques made by the ACLU regarding single-sex education. The first argument is that “there is good evidence that sex segregation increases gender stereotyping and legitimizes institutional sexism” (Kimmel, 1). They believe a single-sex educational environment inadvertently leads to the reinforcement of stereotypes.
