Dating Violence In Schools Essay
To solve this ever so apparent problem, dating violence presentations should be made in schools. This will show the warning signs of abuse that may be highlighted. It can also show what to do and how to remove oneself out of said relationship. A presentation of this sort will show that people must be aware of these relationships and that they do happen. Presentations like this, when presented in schools, can help troubled students who are in abusive relationships. These presentations can also help friends of victims and show them the path they should take to help their friend. In order to help these teen couples there will also be ways to have a healthy relationship.Suggestions on how to have a relationship that is healthy and not abusive is a key component to solving the problem with unhealthy, violent relationships.
Another way this issue can be solved is having students meet with counselors and talk about and and all relationships they have. This solution could work like the presentations, however, it would be more small group or one on one based. Teens can talk safely with their counselor, and hopefully create a way to help themselves. Without a solid definition of dating violence defining what is abuse and what is not gets rather difficult, but there is a way to solve this. Finding one term or definition for abuse that is used universally can be of great help. Knowing that both genders are equally guilty of abusing the other person affects the gender stereotypes within dating violence. A solution to this problem is a school outreach towards students that are going through this tough time. No matter the gender of a person, being in an abusive relationship is not something that a person should ever have to deal with.     The segment about college dating violence impacted my perception on intimate relationships, but it helped me understand the warning signs and what the states/federal statutes define assault. After reading this article, what particularly enlightened me was various risk and protective factors in dating violence, but very little empirical research on dating violence among a particular age group and education level. The awareness of dating violence among various age groups and to evaluate the effect of these awareness programs. For instance, a presentation on dating violence and ways to help or refer someone if they need assistance. After reading this article and others on dating violence enhanced my understanding of the topic and my personal life because I’m currently a college student. In addition, this better understanding may potentially help me in my job in the criminal justice field. For instance, I may help someone who I know get the assistance he/she needs to get out of that abusive relationship. According to the article, college students have a 10% to 50% chance of experiencing dating violence. (Kaukinen, 2014, p. 284) According to this statistic, approximately half of college students experience dating violence, which can have a negative impact on their well-being and health. For some college students this might be their first serious romantic relationship making them vulnerable to dating violence.I believe that a program on college campuses is necessary to reduce dating violence and teach about ways to prevent dating violence.
