Dave From Heartbeat Analysis
“All our knowledge has its origins in our perceptions.” This quote by Leonardo Da Vinci may look small, but carries a tremendous meaning to it. This quote means that your reality can change because of your perception. In Collection Two’s theme of Perception and Reality, Dave from Heartbeat by David Yoo, Scrooge from A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, and Winnie from Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt all showed that a single event can change their perception on things.
To begin with, Dave from Heartbeat by David Yoo changes his perception on himself after Sarah made fun of him for being skinny. This is palpable on page 25, lines 6-9, the passage states,“‘Oh my gosh...you are so skinny.’ She was visibly repulsed by my sunken chest as I stepped off the soccer...picture. ” It is logical to conclude that Dave’s perspective on himself changed since someone else told him he was skinny. He later realizes that there was nothing with him initially. As I would perceive this, Dave was trying to look as strong as John Cena instead of trying to be himself..

This is evident on page 102, the text reads,“‘I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all year. I will live in the Past, the Present, and the Future. The Spirits of all Three shall strive within me. I will not shut out the lessons they teach.Oh, tell me I may sponge away the writing on this stone.’” It is legitimate to conclude that Scrooge is changing his perception on Christmas for many reasons, one of which is death. In my opinion, Scrooge immediately alters his perception on other people after the ghosts came and showed him his mistakes. He wants to rectify his mistakes to help everyone, along with him as

Scrooge emphasizes, "What a fine day fellow... An Intelligent boy, a remarkable boy." This is a critical part of this novel because this shows Scrooge overcame his dislike of Christmas and his entire disliking of people. Instead of rudely gesturing to people, he is now starting to act nicer, and more mature. Scrooge exclaims, " Come back to the butcher and I'll give you a shilling. Come back in two minutes and ill give you a crown!" this show Scrooge truly overcomes the was he acts. Scrooge was all about the money- never wanted to share. When I read this story it showed how Scrooge changed during the three visits from each spirit the first one was the ghost of christmas past, the second was the ghost of the christmas present, the third one was the ghost of the christmas future and it talked about how it has affected scrooge in the past, present, and the future, I think the future affected him the most because he thought having a lot of money would make him a popular person, but when he saw his death, and he was alone, he began to realize money is not what makes family, he thinks about tiny tim about that tiny tim is not rich but he is everyone favorite. Once he have visited every ghost he has changed he is now a nice person.…

This was that Scrooge did NOT appreciate anything he had in his life. Throughout the beginning of the story, Scrooge took everything for granted. Of course, Scrooge could not realize this because his greed for money took over his soul. He was so caught up in making money, that he did not take a look around him to understand that he was blessed with a loyal clerk, a prosperous company, and a jolly relative still alive. The motif that Scrooge didn’t appreciate him clearly ties back with the chosen passage. This is because when Marley comes to tell Scrooge about the three ghosts, the ghosts will turn him into a more cheerful, appreciative, person. This is also the first part in the story when Scrooge has an opportunity to realize that Marley was such a great friend and partner to him.…

Here are some reasons, the first reason is, in the Christmas carol he made a character named scrooge. Scrooge is supposed to be a bad, cruel, and a rude person. No one likes him in the Christmas carol, everyone is afraid of him. Dickens also created three spirits in the story. Each spirit is supposed to teach Scrooge lessons and his mistakes. The spirits threaten him if he doesn’t change and fix his mistakes. The first spirit took him on a trip into his Christmas past to show him how he acted when he was little. When Scrooge was little his life was filled with joy and happiness but now Scrooge’s life is very dark. The spirit is trying to show Scrooge what is missing in his life. Which is joy and happiness.…

In 'A Christmas Carol', Charles Dickens represents Scrooge as an unsympathetic man who is offered the opportunity to redeem himself. Through use of language, the reader is positioned to view him adversely, but during the journey of morality lessons shown by three spirits, Scrooge recovers his sense of joy by undergoing a significant transformation. Scrooge seeks redemption through the many lessons taught by the Spirits of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come.…

In this scene he is taken to his grave in the future and he then shows his fear and admits that he has done wrong throughout his life once he sees that no one cares that he has died. He says ‘Hear me! I am not the man I was.’ the way he says ‘hear me!’ suggests that he wants everyone to know and hear that he has changed from his pervious self. I think Dickens may have included this episode within the story to show Scrooge admitting he’s now different. Also, earlier in the story, Scrooge says that the poor population should die. However, after seeing what death is like, his point of view may have changed and he may take back what he said…

He remembers how he was rejected, and then he feels regretful and sad for what he had done and what might happen because of him. In the second stave it says, “The school is not quite deserted,” said the Ghost. “A solitary child, neglected by his friends, is left there still” (33). This depicts that Scrooge had no one that really loved him. He didn’t have any real friends or people to talk too. Scrooge thinks about what he has done, and says regretfully, “There was a boy singing a Christmas carol at my door last night. I should like to have given him something” (36). This demonstrates that Scrooge knows that he has made mistakes, and is starting to become a better person, with the Ghosts’ help. Scrooge becomes sad, finally thinking about someone other than himself. “Spirit,” said Scrooge, with an interest he had never felt before, “Tell me if Tiny Tim will live.” “I see a vacant seat,” replied the Ghost, “In an old chimney corner, and a crutch without an owner, carefully preserved. If these shadows remain unaltered by the future, the child will die” (65). This shows that Scrooge really does care about other people. He is recognizing his emotions for other people…

In the play, Scrooge is a greedy, self centered man who cares for nothing but money and himself. His old, dead friend and partner, Marley, visits Scrooge in the night to tell him to change. Marley sends three spirits to haunt Scrooge to enforce that change. Scrooge is shown his past by the Spirit of Christmas Past. Past shows Scrooge a Christmas long ago where he is alone in the school house. “The schoolroom is not quite deserted. A solitary child, neglected by his friends, is left there still.” (Charles Dickens #) Scrooge is then shown an older boy of himself, but still alone and Fan, Scrooge’s sister, comes to bring Scrooge home. Past shows Scrooge where he was apprenticed. Scrooge is then shown his old loved one and it is shown that they separate forever. Scrooge is taken back home, but he does not believe what happened and at one o'clock, the Spirit of Christmas Present comes and shows Scrooge the present Christmas.
