Dave Jump: A Narrative Fiction
There was a rap at the apartments entrance that made Dave jump. He rolled his eyes behind his dim shades and reminded himself of how much he hated visitors, especially when it was 11:40 in the evening. With a groan, Strider stood and trudged toward the doorway, twisted the handle, and yanked the door open. The last person he expected this sudden, spontaneous visitor to be, looked at him and quickly brought him into an embrace. Said hug was rather tight, which caused Dave to inhale deeply in fear he'd suffocate otherwise. "Yo, dude." He greeted nonchalantly and planned to oppress his joy for a while. If he expressed what he felt at that moment in time, he would have immediately started bawling and hugging back tightly; but he had to act as if he were upset with the other, or at least not as ecstatic that he was home. He was, after all the reason Dave had to take care of himself--why he was alone and worried all the time.

"Huh?"

"Have you been okay, y'know, emotionally? You aren't..depressed or anything, right? Pissed at me?"

Dave shrugged and shook his head. "No..."

"Are you...sure?"

Dave, after a minute or two, let out a heavy sigh and removed his sunglasses. He placed them carefully upon the coffee table before himself, glaring at the hardwood floor. Removing ones shades were the Strider brother's way of saying they're being entirely serious

"I may not be sure, actually."

The words made Dirk pause with wide eyes. He didn't think it'd be that easy, getting him to tell him what was really wrong.

"Do you want to know why?" Dave asked with a slightly hurt expression. It seemed like he was gaining courage. Dirk nodded hesitantly, not sure what the other was going to tell him.

"I've been alone for almost a year and a half. I have no one to look up to, I have no one to talk to." Said Dave who gripped his sleeve as he teared up a

His lips parted into a timid smile, and our neighbour's image blurred with my sudden tears.…

A Man Named Dave is the third installment of Dave Pelzer's life. It tells the story of Dave Pelzer struggling to get money and to survive in society and how he tries to overcome his memories of being abused as a child. For those who haven’t read the first two books (The Child Called It, and The Lost Boy) this book starts with Dave remembering the last day of abuse with his mother on March 4, 1973. He describes being hit in the throat with a broom, pushed down steps and choked; he was then rescued on March 5, 1973. His childhood years with his mom, who is entitled as ‘The Mother’, were the most abusive years any child could imagine; but that was all a flashback. There are many spontaneous flashbacks and flash forwards throughout the book. In 1979,as Pelzer flies away from Southern California to join the Air Force in Florida he remembers the time in Foster Care when he had to learn things that even a toddler would know; like what shampoo is used for. After being adopted, Dave receives an endless amount of love from his foster parents, the Turnboughs, who treat him like no one ever has. In his teen years, Dave becomes a workaholic, trying to prove his worth. But unfortunately his work overtakes his education, and he drops out of school. Instead of doing things typical teens would do, Dave would spend long days working; sometimes he worked forty or more hours a week. However, later on Dave works on his education and receives his GED. In boot camp, Pelzer's drill sergeant reminds him of his mother, by the way he demands and barks at everyone. Dave gets even more discouraged when his letters to his father return to him unopened. He dreams of making enough money to buy a home for his father and himself. Even though Dave feels he has escaped his mother, at night he suffers from terrifying nightmares of her. He feels she has control over his dreams. As Pelzer travels back to California, he stresses about seeing his mom and he hopes…

He let the ministries zip past (the pink, the white), and a series of stores on the main street, their windows flash ing. Now he was beginning the most pleasant part of the run, the real ride: a long street bordered withtrees, very little traffic, with spacious villas whose gardens rambled all theway down to the sidewalks, which were barely indi cated by low hedges. Abit inattentive perhaps, but tooling along on the right side of the street, heallowed himself to be carried away by the freshness, by the weightlesscontraction of this hardly begun day. This involuntary relaxa tion, possibly, kept him from preventing the accident. When he saw that the womanstanding on the corner had rushed into the crosswalk while he still had thegreen light, it was already somewhat too late for a simple solu tion. Hebraked hard with foot and hand, wrenching him self to the left; he heard thewoman scream, and at the collision his vision went. It was like falling asleep all at once. He came to abruptly. Four or five young men were get ting him out from under the cycle. He felt the taste of salt and blood, oneknee hurt, and when they hoisted him up he yelped, he couldn't bear the presssure on his right arm. “Ugh!”, he grunts from how large the suitcase is. “Will you be able to carry that, Scottie?” she says, her face, worn from time, twists with concern for her son. “Of course”, he laughs. “Okay, if you’re sure.” She says as she opens the metal gate to the front yard. They slowly walk through the cracked pathway until they reach the steps to the porch. Beatrice opens the sturdy door with her keys. “Honey, I’m home!” Scottie yells into the empty living room. “Must you do that every time you come inside the house?” She says fondly. “Of course, I must.” He says as if she should already have known the answer. While they were talking, Alice and Jake, Scottie’s younger siblings, heard his announcement and excitedly ran out of their room and down the beige stairs. “Stop making all that racket!” she admonishes her children. “SCOTTIE!” they yell out enthusiastically. “You’re home!” Alice states, full of wonder that her big older brother is finally back where he belongs. “Well, it’s obvious that I’m home unless I’m an imposer who’s secretly an alien”, He jokes, winking at Alice. “I definitely didn’t miss your humor,” Jake lightheartedly says. “Oh, come on, I tell the best jokes”, Scottie says smiling. “Yeah right, in your dreams”, Jake jokingly teases. “Leave your brother alone for right now. He had a long trip and he’s probably exhausted.” Beatrice gently tells to her…

Tom wondered for what seemed to be the millionth time why Dectives were required to dress like wall-street bankers or stock analysts. At least that was the expectation in public, however the moment he had the office to himself, he unknotted his tie, slipped off the linen suit jacket, and undid the top button of his shirt, then sat back in his chair, raised his eyes to the ceiling, and tapped the tip of a ballpoint pen against his teeth. That was Tom's usual mode of concentration and contemplation, and so intent was the man's focus on the new case that all else slipped from his mind, even the recollection that he'd texted his wife. Therefore, the sudden familiar sound of her voice, accompanied by the enticing aroma of barbecue, startled him, and he immediately shot upright. The sight of Lila elicited a smile that only widened with the greeting and kiss. "Sorry baby."…

The front door opened slowly, letting out the same creaking sound that seemed to never stop reverberating through the house. The same heavy footsteps pounded in the foyer; a sigh escaped from Louise Millard’s lips, knowing she’d have to clean up the stains her husband’s filthy shoes left on the carpet, despite her repeatedly telling him not to wear his shoes in the house. Mrs. Busybody sat up to see the worst surprise ever. The terrible and mean Johnny Dorset has come back. She got ran around the house faster than a cheetah. Awe Man! , “I thought I would never see him again”, she said. “Lord, why me? Is this punishment for popping Johnny’s little, red ball or breaking all his sticks so he wouldn’t be able to play that Indian game”, she thought. Whichever one it was please forgive me. All of sudden, a thought struck her head. “I can leave for a few days”. Mrs. Busybody quickly ran to my dresser and pulled out a week’s worth of clothes. What about my two cats’? , she thought. “I’ll just leave them here”. “My cats are missing limbs and ears and they’re beaten up. If they weren’t in such poor condition, I would gladly them with me”. But, Johnny decided he wanted to throw medium sized rocks at them. Poor cats, they haven’t been the same since then. She finished getting her items together. Mrs. Busybody walked outside to the old, raggedy, blue car in the drive way. She started driving and the car started making funny noises. The dusty, slow car broke down in front of a big cabin. This is better than nothing. “At least I’m away from Johnny”, she said with a stupid grin on her…
