Otis in the Global Elevator Industry
1.0 Introduction
As the urbanisation increase, the demand for elevator increase too. Yet, elevator business is a special business and Otis is a well-known brand, the public may not be familiar with this company. Thus, the case study of “Otis in the global elevator industry”, it will comprehensively study Otis’s status in recent year, and how do elevator companies in operating their business, and what is the elevator market involved and industry condition?

2.0 Analyzing the External Environment
2.1 The General Environment
Demographic:
Population increase led to an increasing demand for elevators. It is because the land is limited, it now tend to construct the building as high as possible. To do so, elevator is an indispensable facility. The better the elevators are, the higher the skyscrapers can be built. In addition, the aging of population increase show that elevator are more necessary in their daily live. This reflected how big the demand of the lifts to people living in developing countries.

Political:
China and India governments encourage investors to develop their business in their countries. Both governments have provided lower tax, and also there are no any import and export restrictions in order to attract investors.1

Economic:
China and India both are developing countries, their economies are very strong and have great potential; GDP increased around 7.9% and 9.5% in 2011 year compared with 2010 year respectively

    1. Introduction Kone is currently facing a precarious financial situation in an industry that competes on price rather than differentiation. With the launch of Kone MonoSpace in Germany, however, the company hopes to make profits as it expands its product line in this very critical market. Germany’s elevator market is the largest in continental Europe and with a market size of 15,500 units in 1995, it is more than the market sizes of the Netherlands, France and the UK combined. The German market is, thus, critical because of its sheer market size and its potential to bring Kone back into a profit making business. This report seeks to address the key considerations of the MonoSpace launch in Germany, its launch strategy and implementation process. 2. MonoSpace’s Value Propositions Currently, MonoSpace can only be used in low-rise buildings because it can not operate on buildings with more than 12 levels. Value propositions of the MonoSpace include: 1. Machine-room-less A machine room is typically 25% of the total elevator cost for geared traction and slightly less for hydraulic elevators. Without the machine room, developers will have more area to rent out or sell. 2. More comfortable ride “ EcoDisc” offers a more comfortable ride as compared to a gearless traction elevator, the most expensive option for an elevator. 3. Extremely energy efficient The energy saved is considerable, ranging between one third to half of other elevator systems. In addition, electrical fuses required for the MonoSpace were $42 a year, significantly cheaper compared to $559 a year for geared traction elevator fuses and $1,119 a year for hydraulic elevator fuses. 4. No oil required Potential fire and environmental hazards are eliminated, as is the cost of oil. 5.     Factors contributed to the launch performance of KONE on the Netherlands, France and UK? When launched, sales of KONE’s Monospace was the highest in Netherlands, then France and in UK none was sold in the first 3 months. Monospace is an elevator invented by KONE using the latest technology that uses an “EcoDisc” that eliminates the use of a machine room and further incur significant energy cost savings for the building management. It is an upgraded version for geared traction elevators. There is more construction freedom and construction costs could be saved using Monospace too. The technology of Monospace then could be used for buildings of 12 floors or less. Hence KONE marketing team targets the low-rise residential elevators market segment in Europe. UK is dominated by low quality construction and high quality construction building works with very few in between mid-ranged constructions. For the one extreme spectrum, high-end elevators are in demand and the other, low budget and quality hydraulic elevators are in demand. Some of the low quality elevators barely meet regulatory standards in UK. Hydraulic elevators took up 90% of the market and only 10% for geared tractions. There are very high switching cost that deters customers to switch from hydraulic to Monospace elevators. The price of a Monospace elevator is twice the price of an hydraulic elevator. Thus even if Monospace made presentations in the London’s Science Museum with all relevant parties, there is a lack of market for Monospace and probably it explains why the sales were so low when it first launched. The situation in Netherlands was the complete opposite. Mid-ranged and low-rise elevators are in great demand as medium quality buildings dominate the market. Furthermore about 70% elevators in Netherlands are geared tractions. All these factors gave Monospace a huge market to play in.
