David Parker Ray What makes a person get to the point that they want to take another person’s life, or inflict pain on another human being just for the pure pleasure of it? To understand a serial killer it is necessary to look into their pastto see if there was any mental problems as a child or teenager. Poverty or low socioeconomic status and childhood abuse and humiliation can cause many serial killers to feel worthless and inadequate, so terrifying victims is a sense of power (Social Structure Theories Chapter 6). In the case of David Parker Ray, according to the book Cries in the Desert, by John Glatt, David Ray grew up in a violent atmosphere. David Ray was born on November 6, 1939 in Belen, New Mexico; his father was an alcoholic and would beat David on any given occasion. Growing up David was a very docile child, who lived under a very strict household with his grandparents. By the age of thirteen David became interested as a mechanic and found a sense of pride and confidence. On a darker side David also became very interested in the world of sadomasochism and torture, he would fantasize of tying up women and torturing them (Cries in the Desert, John Glatt).
