David Sedaris Experience Of Being The Odd Man
David Sedaris' experience of being the odd man out in his French class can relate to most of us. His miscommunication about the Easter rabbit with his French teacher was funny to the reader, but it was an embarrassing moment for him at that time. I can remember being unsure of myself plenty of times in class, especially when I didn't quite know something, and ended up making a fool of myself. Sometimes having a disagreement over a topic can happen with our teachers, but it would be embarrassing for us if we were wrong. Things can also happen inside the classroom with your peers, and teacher that would land you in a sticky situation but become a funny story when looking back at it. I can recall a time when I was the odd woman in a situation

I do not know why I was an emotional wreck since this was not my first time being the new kid. I walked into Mrs. Jenkins’s class, and I could just feel the noise getting sucked into the air. Later, recess came, and almost half of my peers came running towards me, throwing random questions at my face. I felt so overwhelmed that I would just stare at them and not say a single word.…

In Me Talk Pretty One Day by author David Sedaris, he writes about the experiences encountered during his time in Paris while taking a French class. Sedaris was among many students ridiculed by the French teacher for not speaking fluently and without error. This article can be easily related to as most people have had teachers that are hard to please and/or prefer to teach by humiliation. The article's theme of dealing with a hostile class environment is evident because the author gives examples of the teacher belittling the students, how the simplest tasks can prove you're not prepared, and how the class came together as a coping mechanism.…

In my story, I am going to tell you that sometimes it is okay being different. It all began when one day I started hearing the opinion of other people about me saying I was known as being “popular/well-known and funny.” I was not sure if that was true. Curiously I asked, “What is my rank or level in the school?”…

“The Seventh Man”, a short story written by Haruki Murakami, is primarily consisted of a flashback into the death of the narrator's childhood friend, K. The narrative starts off with a group of men listening to the seventh man, who never once mentions his actual name, verbally recalling the events of his life. Starting with his young years, the seventh man anonymously introduces his childhood best friend, K., who meant great importance to the narrator. The story’s setting of a small beach town, called the Province of S, heavily contributes to the overall conflict; the little town placed directly in the eye of a violent typhoon. The Seventh Man and K’s parents allow them to inspect what damage was done, they decided to venture off to the beach. Instinctively, the narrator noticed the large wave approaching and instantly retreated as fast as possible. K, unaware of the imminent danger, is swallowed by the massive tsunami wave.…

In the philosophical novel “The Stranger”, written by Albert Camus, the story ended with Meursault’s last thoughts. He thinks, “For everything to be consummated, for me to feel less alone, I had only wish that there be a large crowd of spectators the day of my execution and that they greet me with cries of hate” (Camus 123). The question is: Why does Meursault hope for this? Why does Camus end the novel at this point? And who is the “Stranger” and why?…

    Breaking the Social Norm

My social norm was walking on campus backwards for an entire day. This was a major challenge to me because when people are not doing the expected in a social environment, I have many opinions on those particular people. So this was definitely a new experience for me. When I first knew this was my idea, I was very nervous and anxious. I was so worried about what other students on campus would think about me. I had various questions going on in my mind. What were others going to say about me? Would the students make fun of me? How would I react if they were to respond to my actions? After the first initial thoughts, I became excited. I wondered how many people would be humored by me walking backwards to class. I was scared that my observations would change my perspective on a lot of ideas. I was nervous because I felt like I was not ready to change my perspective on everything after only one day. This was a huge step for me. I knew that I could not be laughing because the experiment would then be pointless. So I gathered myself together the night before and hoped this major challenge would go smoothly.…

I walked in on the first day of freshman year, not knowing what the school year held in store for me. I had no idea what classes and teachers were assigned to me. We went to our first period, which for me was Geometry. The bell rang and came second period. My schedule said "Public Speaking," but I did not have a clue on what that was. I began to get tense and anxious because surprises are not my thing. The teacher walked in and said, "Hi, welcome to Public Speaking. You'll be learning how to speak in front of a large group of people. We will be reading speeches and also debating against one another." My heart dropped. I started to get even more edgy. All my life before freshman year, I struggled tremendously to speak in front of a class. My…

Oh no, not again. A crowd of amused snickers erupted from behind me. It seemed as though my teacher had forgotten to accessorize with her pitchfork and horns this morning. I looked up at her and crossly glared. Apparently, no number of parent-teacher conferences could deter her from her “we sometimes have to do things we do not want to” mentality. I looked down at the page and read very slowly, stumbling and whistling through every s, sh, st and everything of the like. I sounded like an angry teapot. This was my own personal hell, and I had an audience. Boy, were they having the time of their lives. You would have thought that I was the world’s best stand-up comedian.…
