The North won the Civil War for various reasons. The North had better resources, they had 22 million people verses in the South where they only had about 15.5 million people. They also had more tracks 22 thousand miles while the South had only 9 thousand. The train was used to the Northerners advantage because they could get their supplies faster like food, ammunition, water and clean clothes. The South didn't have the industry to produce good and the ports were all blocked so other imports from other counties couldn't come in.…
According to national geographic, water accounts for eighty percent of the natural greenhouse warming and the other twenty percent is due to gases present in small amount such as carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide. Carbon dioxide is the big absorber of sun rays, it is released through burning of fossil fuels and emissions from cars which increase the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere leading to increase in temperatures. An environmental effect of global warming is high temperatures that lead to changes in water cycle. This explains the fact mentioned by Mc Kibben in his article, ‘the Arctic has melted with stunning speed the last two summers and the pH of the oceans has shifted dramatically just in the last decade’. Increase in temperatures due to rising carbon dioxide levels will cause the ice in Polar Regions to melt off quickly and upset our water cycles, leading to ocean level rising and increase in the level of diseases. In order to stop global warming much has to be…
Another major effect of global warming is the warming of the ocean. Brown suggests that due to the increase in temperature, “polar ice sheets and mountain glaciers” are melting (6). The ocean's’ surface is rising, and this is causing the ice caps to disappear which in turn will cause a decrease in rain in North America (Lyans 151). The current drought in California is proof that this is really happening. The warming of the ocean will also cause sea levels to rise.…
Global climate change has been a subject of much discussion for some time now. The earth has naturally gone through heating and cooling phases in its lifetime. Most scientists agree that these changes aren’t solely the product of humans, but that the time required for natural climate change has been decreased due to humans. This has led to new problems for the earth and all of its inhabitants. According to research the earth is warming at an average of 1.2-1.4° F every 100 years (epa.gov).…
3) Some changes that scientists fear may happen worldwide because of climate change is that because the ice is melting there is less summer ice cover which means that the dark waters will trap the sun’s heat and will melt the ice which will contribute to the melting of the ice sheets in Greenland. The sea level will rise as the ice melts which is bad-bad news for people living in coastal communities all over the world at risk. Let me give the facts New York City has 520 miles of…
Everyone’s life begins with birth and ends with death. It’s the nature rule that no one could offense it. From ancient to modern times, there always somebody want to escape from death, but no one success. Death could also bring fear to people. One of the characters created by Edgar Allen Poe, Prince Prospero took some measures to avoid death, because of the fear of death. Edgar Allen Poe uses symbolism in “The Masque of the Red Death” to illustrate that death is inevitable and undefeated.…
The movie is truly an eye opener. It tells us that while we have not yet suffered the same fate as those in the movie, we can still try to prevent and hopefully remedy the situation. We can start with ourselves and maybe move on to the larger communities. Big businesses play a big role in our environment. If they were to pollute, expect pollution to come out in huge amounts. But if they were to become responsible and take the fate of the world into account, if they were to do their best to fight pollution and go green, we may actually see concrete…
This movie really gets you thinking about the environment and what we are doing to it. The facts stated and the information revealed has shocked many. Gore used many graphs and statements to show us that global warming does exist, and it is causing many problems for us and the Earth. For example, he had stated, "the top ten hottest years on record have occurred in the past fifteen years" (An Inconvenient Truth). This quote was an example of logos because he used facts and deductive reasoning to prove that the hottest year ever was the same year this movie was released in, which was 2005. You can imagine how much warmer it might be getting now! Also, it was shown that temperature increase is largely dependant on the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere. He uses the heatwave in Europe i 2003 as a reference, which killed 35,000 people. Gore also talks about how all of the fossil fuels we are taking for granted, and not only is it hurting the environment that we're using them so much, our children may not have the same luxury people have today.…
Global warming is the gradual increase in the temperature of the earth's atmosphere and oceans, mostly caused by the greenhouse effect. The greenhouse effect is where incoming short-wave solar radiation from the sun can pass through the earth’s atmosphere to reach the surface; some of this radiation is then reflected back into space at a longer wavelength. Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere absorb some of this long wave radiation and re-radiate it back to the earth’s surface, trapping heat in our atmosphere. There have always been natural fluctuations in the earth’s temperature, for the last 2.5 million years earth has shifted between cold glacial periods, and warmer interglacial periods. We are currently in an interglacial period, where the temperatures have been warm, with very small fluctuations for the last 10,000 years. Over the last century global temperatures have increased rapidly, there was a sharp rise in temperature between 1900 and 2000 of 0.7oC. Most scientists agree that this sharp increase was caused by human activities (anthropogenic). This continued increase in temperatures could have many major impacts worldwide, both positively and negatively.…
The video Six Degrees Could Change the World by National Geographic personally had a significant impact on me. I knew that “global warming” was occurring as we speak and I knew that there were some dramatic effects from it.. I could not, however, even fathom how fast it was happening nor that some of the effects demonstrated were even possible. The amazon, ne of the wettest places on earth, could turn into an arid savanna.…
The Artic Sea ice is very thick and melting rapidly. Also, it covers millions of square miles on the polar region. The glaciers go away when the temperature gets warmer. Solar radiation received by the Earth also causes global warming. When the atmosphere gets polluted from carbon dioxide more radiation comes through and harms people. Earthquakes and volcanos affect the climate change. When the volcano erupts, the ashes from the cone come out and poisonous gases explode through the environment.…
The first film, The Day After Tomorrow, is a 2004 science fiction disaster film written, directed, and produced by disaster film alumni Roland Emmerich. Emmerich specializes in disaster movies but also specializes in sensationalism. “The plot depicts the worst case scenario of the effects of global warming including extreme weather and the beginning of a new ice age. The protagonist is Jack played by Dennis Quaid who studies paleoclimatology in Antarctica. Jack witnesses ice shelves breaking and…
The earth is literally melting. Global warming is causing the earth to overheat. This is the result of emissions released into the atmosphere through greenhouse gases and human activity. There are numerous reasons as to why this is happening and causing the earth to increase in temperature. Global warming occurs all over the world, and has been happening for many years now. Food shortages, contaminated water, extreme weather, and deadly heat threaten human health because of the rising temperatures. To this day, global warming has not only affected humans, but has…
I bet you’ve only heard of one of these movies though. Olsen citizises the movie Too hot to Handle for focusing too much on accuracy and not telling a story. While this movie is quite a bit more accurate than An Inconvenient Truth it did not connect with nearly as many people and was not nearly as influential. Too hot to Handle was full of actual scientist speking about the issues and an abundance of accurate data (Olsen, 108). This movie was also very boring and did not reach even a fraction of the people that Al Gores’s movie did. Al gore chose to combine his research about the risks of global warming with stories about his family and even some humor (Olsen, 108). By doing this he kept the audience entertained and made them care about the material. Even though all of his data was not perfect and most of his predictions were inaccurate he began a conversation with his story. Gore told a story about how climate change effects everyone around the world. He broke out of the overly analytical word of scientific acidemia and made a movie that changed how the world views climate…
Scientists believe that over the past 2.8 billion years, immense layers of ice have covered the Earth. The ice age proposes a puzzle composed of the works and findings of dozens of scientists through history, each providing a crucial piece to the puzzle. Scientists who worked on the development of this puzzle ranged from Geologists, Astronomers, Physicists, and early Biologists whom ultimately proved the complexity of this expanding subject. Progressing from a hypothesis based on myths to factual evidence, the subject of ice ages has provided immense insight to past and current global climate change.…
