Days Of War Monologue Analysis
Days of War

Prologue - (Josephine's letter)

My Dearest,

Although this comes at the worst time, I have been selected to be Lieutenant General, and am leaving tomorrow. I know our wedding was soon, and that we could have been on to a happier life, but as of now, my duty is to serve this country and protect its people. Promise me, Samuel, that you will keep me up to date on what is happening in the city. You know the reason we moved was so I could be surrounded by the commotion, even if you despised it. I must go now, they are getting ready to board, so in my last words from California, I love you.

~ Yours always, Josie

“My sweet love Rosie, oh how I miss you so dearly. The date is the 9th of August, I am safe and well, I’m ever so sorry for not sending any letter for the past few days, for three days and three nights myself and my fellow soldiers have been fighting in Lone Pine. We were surrounded, we had no idea what our fate was, we couldn’t see the Turks, it was a tragic site, thousands of my mates shot in cold blood, myself and the remaining 12 men were huddled in a circle, firing into an oblivion, luckily, I was not injured, not even a scratch on me. All those men that lost their lives, half were only boys, no older than twenty, oh their dearest mother’s not knowing of the tragedy that unfolded, I cannot even begin to imagine how they will feel when they receive that…

I signed up to fight in the war because everybody else was, because it was an expectation of us men to defend our mother country and do what was considered right, justified and brave. Honestly, I didn’t know what to expect of our coming battles, but I certainly wasn’t afraid, too naïve to understand the risks I was facing. War is not all it is said to be. We soldiers were told it was to fight for our honour, nobility and home, but none of that mattered in the midst of battle. War is about bloodshed, murder, and above all, survival.…

Paglilitis ni Mang Serapio is a play written by Paul Dumol, currently an Economics professor at the University of Asia and the Pacific, during his high school years at Ateneo de Manila University. This play has been staged by countless theatre organizations already, producing myriad of interpretations and dramatizations. However, probably one thing has been constant in each of them since it was instilled in the text itself – that Paglilitis ni Mang Serapio is a tragedy.…
