Dbq- Han China and Greece
After viewing the documents, it is clear that Classical Athens and Han China are very different politically. Athens focused on the rights of the individual whereas Han China preferred dominance that used an imperialist approach. However, the reason for this difference in political beliefs can be based on the difference of population. It is easier to be a democracy with a smaller population than a larger one. That said it is also easier to rule many people with a select elite. Another difference is that their social aspects are opposites. Athenians believed that everyone should obey the laws of society and turn in those who break them. Han china thought that it is better to obey the rules but should always prefer family over government. Despite many differences, both Classical Athens and Han China thought there should be class distinctions between poor and the wealthy, few and many, free people and slaves. In document 4, Pericles describes the Athenian form of democracy and a few of their laws. Pericles showed the importance for all men who are able to participate in government and politics. Document 6 shows a conversation between two Chinese philosophers named Wan Chang and Mencius about how an emperor of Han China was “appointed” to office. Mencius indicated that the emperor himself was not appointed by peasants, but by “Heaven”. Documents 2 and 3 show the population differences and document 1 compared the size of Attica and Han China. Because Athens had a smaller population and a smaller province, a “true” democracy was easier to uphold. Fewer votes meant less of a challenge to keep count. Because Han China had a larger population and a greater size a land, no one could truly voice their own personal opinion. Instead the emperor appointed smaller classes of rulers to govern specific areas.
In document 9, a Greek philosopher names Socrates explains to one of his friends that citizens must obey and enforce the laws created by their government; if one does not

Imperial Rome and Han China had some similarities and differences in their foundation. In the eight century B.C.E., Rome began as a small city-state on the western side of Italy. Originally they were a monarchy but in 509 B.C.E. they knocked off the monarchy and made themselves republic. In their republic system, the wealthy class, known as patricians, dominated. The lower class was called plebeians. The Romans had laws that protected the lower class form abuse. The Romans took great pride in their system, believing it gave them more freedom. With this political system, the Romans launched their empire, a process that took more than 500 years. The Chinese were not building a new empire yet they were restoring the old. The Chinese empire started as early as 2200 B.C.E. By 5oo B.C.E. the Chinese state was in shambles which they considered as the warring states, which were seven kingdoms within the Chinese government fighting against each other. China finally reunified in 221 B.C.E. Han China and Imperial Rome are similar because they both flourished at about the same time (200 B.C.E. – 200 C.E.), conquered about the same amount of land (about 1.5 million square miles), and had about the same population (50 to 60 million). The reason for the similarities and differences in the foundation in both of the empires was because Rome was a new empire while the Han dynasty was just restoring the old but they were still the dame due to their similarity in the time era both empires flourished, they occupied a similar area, and they contained a similar population.…

Athens created a democracy that worked because Athens was small enough that they could have everyone come to the meetings and participate in the government. Also in Document 4 Pericles states that Athens is a true democracy because no one can be kept out of government because of their poverty or social standing. Also that in private dispute no one person will be favored over the other in front of the law. Han China had a rule of emperors instead of democracy because their civilization was so big they couldn’t have a council of all the people meet every couple of weeks to debate on the course of action Han China will take. Instead in China the emperor appointed officials to a district who in turn appointed some of their men to rule over smaller parts of the district to keep order in that district for the emperor. For another person to become the emperor he has to have the Mandate of heaven, for the man to have the Mandate of heaven the emperor has to present him to heaven and heaven decides if he is worthy through the peoples’ support or lack of…

One major similarity between the administration policies of Han China and Imperial Rome was that both empires had very centralized governments. In China, the emperor had all the power. While there were smaller units of government, the emperor controlled everything within the empire. Han China’s government structure was modeled after its precursor, the Qin dynasty. The Han elaborated on the original structure, perfecting it. In Rome, the emperor was also the most powerful; however the Roman people had an illusion of power not seen in Han China. Although the emperor held the…

Imperial Rome’s political method is centered around polytheism. Han China’s political method is centered around Confucianism during the beginning of the dynasty, and then around Daoism after political changes were made. . Confucianism is defined as more of a philosophy than a religion. Confucius taught philosophical and ethical ideas, that shaped the traditional Chinese culture. Han China, after change in authority, transformed from Confucianism to Daoism. Imperial Rome was centered around polytheism, the worship of many Gods. It is very different than Daoism. Daoism is based upon philosophy and nature, but polytheism is based upon gods. Han China and Imperial Rome express different political methods of control through religion. Imperial Rome and Han China had different ways in which their leaders were chosen. In Han China, rule was gained through ancestors into a centralized bureaucratic authority. “Fathers cover up for their sons, and sons cover up for their fathers…” Confucius on the Individual and State. Soon after the time of Confucius, two incredible civilizations rose: classical Athens in the West, and Han China in the East. In Classical Athens, around 470- 430 BCE, they had the first democratic government, the basis for the political systems of many powerful countries today. In the East, around 202 BCE- 220 CE the people of Han China accomplished great architectural projects such as the Great Wall of China, and the Terracotta Army. These two civilizations had two very different mindsets. In Athens they focused on what the individual could do to show loyalty to the city, while in China they focused more on loyalty to the family. Therefore, Han China had the better civilization because they held respect for their elders in higher regard than politics; they had the more efficient political system; and they respected nature and recognized that the Earth controlled them.…

Han China and Ancient Athens were both very successful cities. The Chinese empire was much larger and was a more unified nation than Greece. Greece was made of many city-states that fought between themselves more often than they fought together. But despite their disputes, Greece had managed to produce many talented philosophers and historians, such as Pericles, Sophocles, Socrates, and Plato. Many historians think it was because of the Greek political system. The following document will compare and contrast Ancient Athens and Han China and show how different the two nations really are using facts about the cities’ physical nature, their governments, and their citizenship:…

From the around second century B.C.E. to the third century C.E. the Han and Roman attitudes toward technology were different in how they took pride in some of their inventions with the Han accepting the role of the craftsmen and their technology they created showed in documents 1-4. However, the Romans did not do as much of this and did not care as much about the technology and how it could be utilized. This was shown in documents 5-8. Both Han China and the Romans did show a similarity in how their technology, even though it was viewed differently, helped to develop their Empires. Throughout these eight documents, everyone one of these had male from the upper class writing the document. I think an additional document that could be useful in answering the question of what the Han and Roman attitudes toward technology were would be a person from the lower class. This document would be useful because that the upper class did not show interest about the technology that a commoner might have used such as hand tools and other common working items.…

Technology is the building block of any society: it allows for new advancements to be made that improve daily life. Two such societies that made advancements in technology included the Han Dynasty and the Roman Empire. As the expansion of the empire increased, the Romans built roads that linked these regions together. These roads were built in such a way that allowed for easier travel: roads were paved and allowed for water to run off. In addition, the empire also developed the transportation of water throughout the city through the construction of aqueducts, which were canals. Likewise, the Han Dynasty made advancements in the distribution of water: there were water ways, canals, and pools that were inspected by hydraulic engineers. Water was also used to power a blowing-engine. Because of the advancements that were made, the Han Dynasty is regarded by historians as the “Golden Age.” Similarly, the Romans created a large empire that stretched from Europe to the Middle East. Because of the vastness of both empires, water and technology were heavily relied upon, yet unlike the Han officials, the upper-class Romans had a negative attitude towards technology.…
