Dbq On The Progressive Era
In the Progressive Era (1890s-1920s), much reform was underway. Many people wanted to improve the way of life in order to live the American Dream. While these reformers succeeded at the national level in some instances, they were not completely unsuccessful in other cases. A case in which reformers succeeded was the Pure Food and Drug Act, which improved the quality of food that was served to Americans. The Neill-Reynolds Report describes meat factories at filthy places where meat was prepared poorly, a result from poor sanitation and the ignorance of employees (Doc A). The findings of this report and many others resulted in this law, which improved the quality of food for Americans, allowing for a better lifestyle. Also, in this time period, women achieved the right to vote through the Nineteenth Amendment. Before this time, twenty million women in the United States could not vote (Doc G). Because of this, women increased their protests in order to attain this goal. As a result, they achieved suffrage through the Nineteenth Amendment. This allowed them to have a say in the federal government. Another instance in which reformers succeeded nationally was the Clayton Antitrust Act. This law was an improvement over the Sherman Antitrust Act, which was ineffective in trying to prevent …show more content…
A time period that changed America at this scale was from 1790-1860. During this time period, many reform movements, such as the Second Great Awakening, swept through the country. Although these movements were not as game-changing as the ones during the Progressive Era, they still had a profound Impact that shaped the future of America. Many of the reform movements of the Progressive Era have their roots in this time period, such as women’s rights, temperance, and African American rights, first appearing as the abolitionist movement.     The policies during the Reconstruction era led to widespread corruption in America. Capitalism had run rampant, allowing exploitative businessmen to oppress the rights of the lower-class average citizne and laborer.
