The main goal of this project is to design an efficient and cost effective 5 volt DC power supply from 220 volt AC source input. The design is completed using a transformer, full wave bridge rectifier, filter with suitable smoothing capacitor and a voltage regulator. After completing the design simulation is performed for the design. From the simulation it is observed that the output wave shape of the DC voltage is very smooth and the value is almost 5.01 V.

Introduction

A power supply is a device that supplies electric power to an electrical load. The term is most commonly applied to electric power converters that convert one form of electrical energy to another. An AC-DC power supply converts alternating current (AC) into the direct current (DC). In general most consumer electronic devices such as desktop computer, mobile phone require a low DC power source. In practical field DC power for electronic devices is most conveniently obtained from commercial AC lines by using rectifier-filter system, called a “DC Power supply”. In this project we are designing a “5

Energy limited, battery powered systems require the utmost in efficiency in order to provide full system capability and maximum battery life. The use of low voltage power supplies (3.3 volts or less) can reduce power consumption at the expense of lower noise margins and a requirement for better voltage regulation. Elements which require high instantaneous power. such as transmitters. microprocessors, backlit displays, and flash memory, can be switched to a low power standby mode when not needed. Applications include portable computers, hand-held instruments. and wireless telecommunications. To fully realize such systems, dc-dc converters are needed which can: (a) regulate the load voltage with (ideally) zero load current; (b) operate at high efficiency with many orders of magnitude variation in the load current; (c) operate efficiently at low output voltages (3.3 volts or less). Losses in a switch-mode converter can be classified as: loud dependent conduction losses (due to transistor onresistance, diode forward voltage drop, inductor…

DC-AC inverter is a device that converts a direct current (DC) into an alternating current (AC). When there is no AC main power for applications in caravans, remote area and etc., this tool is very suitable to use. It mainly converts a DC source (like a car’s battery) to an AC source (230V) to use for power application like laptop, TV and so on. First it converts a DC voltage to an AC voltage then it boosts up the AC voltage to mains voltage level by using a transformer. In this laboratory experiment, an CMOS IC were used to function as a 50 Hz oscillator, along with the necessary transistors, resistors, capacitors and a transformer to form a 230V AC source from a 12V DC. The design process was taken through the several steps of calculations, computer simulation and verification. The circuit design was simulated by the Multisim software. The effects of circuit were studied during simulation and assembled circuit in real time. One of fact that has to be considered is energy consumption. In this circuit a CMOS IC has been used which has very low consumption. The ideal dc to ac inverter is the one can produce a perfect sin wave. Since it is complicated, here a simple circuit that produce a square wave is used.…

A diode is a two-terminal device, having two active electrodes, between which it allows the transfer of current in one direction only. Diodes are known for their unidirectional current property, wherein, the electric current is allowed to flow in one direction. Basically, diodes are used for the purpose of rectifying waveforms, and can be used within power supplies or within radio detectors. They can also be used in circuits where 'one way' effect of diode is required. Most diodes are made from semiconductors such as silicon, however, germanium is also used sometimes. Diodes transmit electric currents in one direction, however, the manner in which they do so can vary. Several types of diodes are available for use in electronics design. Some of the different types are:…
