This challenge came after De La Hoya said in a radio interview a week ago that he was thinking about coming back to the ring everyday as he believes he is still fit enough to fight, according to an article in Fight Saga.
The article even mentioned something about a potential match with current middleweight champion Miguel Cotto, as the Golden Boy said that he is not up to any warmup or tune up bouts but only wants the best fight available if ever he would make a comeback.

Immediately after defeating Filipino icon Manny Pacquiao on May 2, Mayweather announced that he will retire from boxing after his last fight this September. There were names mentioned on his possible last opponent, such as Amir Khan, Kell Brook, Saul Alvarez, and Cotto, but there are still no official announcements.
Meanwhile, De La Hoya responded to the call with a video of his own. Bleacher Report showed a video where the 42-year-old said that he is “happy, retired, and content” and he has no plans of coming back. The Golden Boy added that a rematch was supposed to happen within the year after their fight, but Mayweather suddenly retired and so Money already missed his chance.
It appears to be that Mayweather is still looking for the biggest possible payday for his grand send-off. But since Pacquiao is still out with an injury, there seems to be no one out there that could generate the amount of money he was hoping for.
