If you were De la Vega, what would you do at this point? Do you think De la Vega has waited too long to make a substantial change in his relationship with Bussard? Why?
At this point, now that so much time has passed without De La Vega being able to perform at full capacity, we would first and foremost demand a meeting with CEO Bussard. Trying to understand the type of person Bussard is, his goals, strengths and weakness including the organizational constraints. This will give De La Vega the necessary insights he will need to have a successful working relationship. De la Vega should study Bussard’s leadership style, by doing so he can develop a strategy to match his skills to what his leader wants. De La Vega should initiate discussions, make himself available, identify problems and offer solutions through the use of emotional intelligence, This will showcase his strengths and usefulness to the company. Accept Bussard for who he is and build a relationship, listen when necessary, and pay compliments on good ideas. De la Vega must also understand himself and know what type of follower he is and eventually would like to be. In order to be an effective follower he has to make the necessary changes to achieve that status. The overall goal De La Vega needs to achieve is the ability to manage up successfully. By doing so he will be able to showcase his personal sources such as his skills, knowledge and expertise. This can be demonstrated through his position source since he is the COO which comes with a certain power and authority. To improve his relationship with Bussard and implement the tactics recommended, De La Vega has to possess the courage to assume responsibility, challenge, participate in transformation and most importantly the courage to serve.
