Dead Butterfly

The Overall meaning of the poem, Dead Butterfly, is to let go of the past because life keeps going on and don’t hold onto things that are making life miserable. The speaker on this poem seems to be the mother of a girl that the poem refers to as her “Daughter”. The daughter of the speaker carries a dead monarch butterfly in mason jar which symbolizes her happy life or her past that have died. The girl seems to be tormented by her past and she seems that she can’t let go of it. Meanwhile the mother is being hurt by her daughter being depressed and she can’t find a way to help her let go off her past. By taking that information from the poem I came up with the conclusion that the meaning of the poem is to don’t hang onto the past.
The poem starts off in the first stanza by the mother of the girl explaining how her daughter seems to “gone” lately. (Bass 1.1-2) says (For months my daughter carried/ a dead monarch in a quart mason jar) So far, the tone is neutral those 2 starting lines don’t have much emotion when its first read. (Bass 2.1-3) The speaker makes questions regarding the events that her daughter went through “Was it the year her brother was born?/ was this her own too fragile baby/ that had lived ---so briefly---in its glassed world?” Those first two lines explain the first life event in her daughter’s life which is the birth of her younger brother who was born premature and died afterwards. (Bass 2.4-5) These stanzas explain how the speakers daughter refuses to go to her father’s house which comes to the conclusion that the speaker and her husband divorced after their premature baby death’s. On the last line in this stanza the speaker makes her last question, on which she wonders that all those life events caused her stop being a happy child full of hopes and
