The poem starts off in the first stanza by the mother of the girl explaining how her daughter seems to “gone” lately. (Bass 2.1-3) The speaker makes questions regarding the events that her daughter went through “Was it the year her brother was born?/ was this her own too fragile baby/ that had lived ---so briefly---in its glassed world?” Those first two lines explain the first life event in her daughter’s life which is the birth of her younger brother who was born premature and died afterwards. (Bass 2.4-5) These stanzas explain how the speakers daughter refuses to go to her father’s house which comes to the conclusion that the speaker and her husband divorced after their premature baby death’s. On the last line in this stanza the speaker makes her last question, on which she wonders that all those life events caused her stop being a happy child full of hopes and
