Dead Fish
The artwork ‘What About The Dead Fish?’ was created by Shamsia Hassani, who is the first female graffiti artist in Afghanistan. This drawing is an example of what she calls a “dreaming graffiti” artwork, which she creates by painting on pictures of places in Afghanistan she would like to visit but is unable to due to the warfare. It was made using spray paint in 2011 on the ruins of a Russian cultural centre in Kabul, Afghanistan. The artwork depicts a scene of a woman in a burqa sitting on the stairs alone by a wall damaged by warfare. The text next to the woman reads “The water can come back to a dried-up river, but what about the fish that died?”. The dimensions of the artwork is unknown, however, based on the picture that was taken …show more content…
The shapes are created by two colors, and defined by black lines to add details, such as the netting of the burqa. There is little to no shading, however, white is used in certain areas, such as the sleeves, to give a sense of dimension. This shift in color further adds detail to the artwork. The simplicity of the artwork shows us that Hassani is not going for a realistic looking piece, and is choosing to focus on communicating her idea in an expressionistic manner. The artist uses only two main colors, blue and white, which creates a strong contrast against the dark background. The bright shades make the subject stand out and brings a sense of beauty in the otherwise damaged scene. The fact that she uses only two colors gives a unified and uniform look to the artwork. It relates different parts of the painting to each other. The location that Hassani chose to display her painting speaks volumes for the message she’s trying to convey. The background shows a building damaged by warfare, with rocks covering the ground and smashed walls. The distressed wall shows the situation Afghanistan was in, and adds a depressive and lonely feeling to the artwork. There is a lot of empty space in the artwork, which isolates the main subject in the painting, and gives us a sense of

The painting consists of a very blue color scheme throughout. This is, in most cases, associated with coldness and sometimes death. The dark blue background also, as mentioned above, provided almost an extreme contrast. In addition to the background, her hair also dark. Had he chosen blonde hair, the contrast would dulled. Most importantly, the girl’s eyeliner very much brings out her eyes. It is strategically placed on her waterlines rather than lids to accentuate her eyeballs and provide incredibly sharp corners to her eyes. The coldness and “deathly” tone of the painting manifests an eerie and dangerous theme. The contrast and accentuation of the girl and her eyes inclines the audience to be intrigued by the girls fearlessness in a cold and deathly…

The color palette of the painting is diverse, while red and warm earth tones dominate the painting. The light source seems to be in front of the left section of the picture while dispersing towards the right. The use of light gives the illusions of volume. The gradation of the sky is very exaggerated. The top is a dark blue and as it reaches the middle the sky is very light. The painting has a smooth finish and is very detailed. The flowers on the bottom are very intricate as well as the patterns of the people’s garments. Each face has a distinguished and unique appearance; no two faces are…

This message is quite different to the one portrayed in ‘Headlong’ as its art form is different. This artwork seem to evoke a sense of danger as though the artist wants to warn us about something. And that the cursive ‘E’ letter could potentially represent a name who is a threat. The black colour in the background symbolizes mysteriousness and fear. The feeling of awareness this painting inflicts reflect this, whereas the feeling of ‘Untitled’ was hope, which also compliments its message.…

The meaning of the painting, as perceived, is the hindrance black people faced in entering the land of prosperity; the obstacle they faced was nothing other than White dominance. There is a White giant like figure in the middle of the painting with a sharp teethed wolf or monster underneath, creating a sense of evilness and scariness. They block the blacks from entering their dreams, in other words, a successful life. As a result, black people are sad and…

One is also drawn to the folds and creases of what looks to be a velvet dress. The eye stops at the hands of the woman and notices her rings and the contrasting nature of her pale white skin to her dark clothes. Brush strokes throughout the painting are minimally seen, creating a very smooth looking painting. The palette used is predominately dark, the darkest parts of the painting would be her dress, eyes, and hair. They contrast greatly with the lightest parts of the painting, her face, hands, and collar.…

    What's Killing the Fish?

Lake Gordon, a large recreational lake is New Jersey, is home to large amounts of fish. However, residents near the lake are starting to notice that unusual amounts of dead fish are appearing on the lake. EPA investigators found that toxic substances were not present in the water, leaking of sewage into the water has caused an increase in the number of aerobic organisms in the sediment of the lake bed along the south shore, and that runoff of detergents and household fertilizers has caused an excess of algae around the south shore. From the data and graphs presented to me on pages 2, 3, and 4, I believe the algae accumulation in the lake is the cause of the dead fish. It could be because the algae are using up vital oxygen sources that the fish need to survive. Table A on page 3 shows the amount of dead fish increase as the number of algae cells increase. This shows that the algae and fish are competing for oxygen, and the fish are losing. Also, oxygen levels in the lake slowly decreased over a 3 day period, as shown by Table B on page 3. This possible algae-fish competition might have contributed to that. Furthermore, the human residences on the lake south shore may contribute to this fish crisis, because the majority of dead fish are amassing near the homes, as shown in Diagram C on page 4. The residents’ runoff of fertilizer and detergent likely caused the algae growth, leading to more dead fish, and also explains why the dead fish are gathering near the south shore. A reasonable solution to this ecological issue would be for the residents to be careful in their detergent/fertilizer usage, and also to create some sort of subterranean barrier between the houses and the lake, so that more pollutants cannot contaminate the lake and create algae via runoff from the residential area. This solution might change my “% Saturation Dissolved Oxygen” graph because with the algae cells reducing in number, there will be less organisms competing for oxygen in the lake,…

She looks to be pregnant, which represents life. The unity of…

As I walked around with a copy of this piece in my school bag for a week or so, I often thought about what I could possibly say about this painting/artist. Also during this time, I shared this painting with a couple of people, and asked them what they thought of the piece without telling them what it depicted. One individual stated, “They look sad about something.” Another individual stated, “The people appeared shame for some reason.” Then I informed them what the piece was and they wanted to look at it again, they were quite impressed with the work after they realized what it was about.…

I believe this painting shows a loss of identity. This is the reason I chose this as my favorite piece of art, because I can relate to it. There came a time in my life where I was struggling with my own identity. In today's world it is very significant to identify oneself with at least one thing (ones ethnicity, nationality, race, religion, or a particular belief). Many people still grapple with the notion of identity in many countries, regions, and various ways in order to fit or adapt into any environment (social, economic, cultural, political, etc). One’s identity determines ones position or situation in society wherever one lives. However, finding the right type of…
