While reading “Broken Spears”, written by Miguel Leon-Portilla, I’ve had a small view of what Mexican culture was like back in those times. They are sort of different from America’s traditions and societies. Broken Spears is unlike others written about the loss of the empire because it was written from the point of the Aztecs and not the Spanish. As the book goes on, Miguel Leon-Portilla describes how the Spanish were successful in taking over the solid empire. The book really starts out by giving a clear background of the beliefs and culture. Motecuhzoma is seen as scary because he made his people surrender. I respect the Indians and Aztecs because their morals and customs were Christian like and seemed as if they did the right thing…

The students are expected by both their parents and school to reach Ivy league standards. Although they are brilliant in the classroom, some students struggle with personal fears. “Here is a small fact: You are going to die.” Death said this quote. He the narrator of Markus Zuka’s The Book Thief. Quote: "On the breast of her gown, in fine red cloth, surrounded with an elaborate embroidery and fantastic flourishes of gold-thread, appeared the letter A. It was so artistically done, and with so much fertility and gorgeous luxuriance of fancy, that it had all the effect of a last and fitting decoration to the apparel which she wore; and which was of a splendor in accordance with the taste of the age, but greatly beyond what was allowed by the sumptuary regulations of the colony." Chapter 2…

Mockingbirds are a symbol of sheer innocence; their existence causes no harm to others and the sole purpose of its life is to make mellifluous music for all to enjoy. The mockingbird’s sweet chorus is destroyed and disregarded in to kill a mockingbird, as the harmless characters of Boo Radley and Tom Robinson are exiled and imprisoned despite their altruism. The use of the mockingbird in the title provides distinction and coincides through characters and events during the novel.…
As Amir tells us about his father, a portrait of an immensely likable, dominant, and moral man emerges. To Amir, Baba is both larger-than-life and principled. The combination of these two qualities magnifies Amir's shame when he abandons Hassan in the alleyway. How could you ever tell a man who supposedly wrestled a bear that you broke one of his principles? That you allowed Assef to steal Hassan's innocence and childhood? Of course, all this is complicated by the fact that Baba – before Amir was born – stole Ali's honor. With that in mind, Baba's bit of advice to Amir contains a good deal of self-loathing.…
No matter what you're life is like, no matter how rich you are, we will all have problems at some point. One of the main themes explored in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is love and hate. Shakespeare uses paradoxical phrases and oxymoron to highlight the contrast of love and hate within the play. An example of this is in Act 1 Scene 5 Line 138 “My only love sprung from my only hate!” said by Juliet which uses anaphora and paradox to show the vast contrast between the love between Romeo and Juliet and the hate between their houses Capulet and Montague. This love and hate relationship between Romeo and Juliet greatly impacts the outcome of the story-line as if there was no intense hate between the houses, the lovers would not have been spurred to make the rash decision of getting married without their parent’s consent and faking their death which…
What they are saying is that one has a hard time trying to stop biting their nails or the just simply can't stop no matter what they try. It’s the exact same way for goals in life, and having to push yourself past something that is stopping you from reaching that goal. “Now the going was easy, and all the legs worked...a sedan driven by a forty year old woman approached. She saw the turtle and swung to the right…” (Steinbeck 761). As you can see this this quote is just an example that not all obstacles and struggles are not hard to get passed, in fact they could be some of the easiest in the…
Macbeth was told that he was going to be king one day by the witches thinking that was his fate in life , but when it didn’t come quick enough he starts thinking of thoughts of killing Duncan and eventually creating a murderer eventually furthering the notion that fate can change a person’s behavior. This quotes show the guilt that Macbeth is feeling after killing Duncan not only that because he did not wait for his fate and took it in his own hands he has now changed his fate for the worse. This can be interpreted in our modern day society as people takeing ‘fate’ in their hands and how we think our fate is becoming this or doing that making us do stupid things or treating others poorly but in reality there is no such thing as fate it’s just…
