“O CAPTAIN! Me captain! Our fearful trip is done;...”- Walt Whitman. The Dead Poets Society took place at a fictional conservative boarding school by the name of Welton Academy. The school is in Vermont in 1959. The school emphasizes tradition, honor, discipline and excellence. Some students reincarnate the Dead Poets Society. This leads to the questions was Mr.Keating, the english teacher, at fault? Mr.Keating was not at fault because the school administration was prejudiced against Mr.Keating for teaching students to think for themselves, the students choice to reincarnate the Dead Poets Society and for Neil’s death.
Generally speaking the school administration disliked Mr.Keating because he was going against what they thought was most important. Mr.Keating was teaching students to think for themselves rather than listen, follow and do things blindly. One example of this is when he tells them to rip pages out of the books. Another example is when they are outside in the courtyard and he tells them to make their walk. This is because Keating was a former member of the Dead Poets Society. Though Keating said, “The administration wouldn’t look favourably on that” when referring to the students recreating the Dead Poets Society he leaves the book with the opening ceremony in Neil’s room. Not only did Keating tell them what the Dead Poets Society was with saying things such as, “We weren’t a greek organization.” and “Poetry rolled off our tongues like honey.” he in no way attempted to stop the reconvening of the Dead Poets Society. Thus, the school blamed Keating because he informed the students of what the Dead Poets Society was and in no way tried to stop the students if anything he helped
