Abstract
According to the World Health Organization, a disability is an umbrella term, covering impairments, activity limitations, and participation restrictions. Impairment is a problem in body function or structure; an activity limitation is a difficulty encountered by an individual in executing a task or action; while a participation restriction is a problem experienced by an individual in involvement in life situations. (Disabilities, W.H.O. p.1 (2010). In this article, the writer gives us an inside look into the lives of three young beautiful girls who are deaf and also blind.
Deaf, Blind Triplets
This article from Reader’s Digest, was written by Kenneth Miller, it is about a family who had to deal with their three deaf and blind children. This is an extraordinary situation and the family was faced with challenges. The causes of deaf-blind people range from household accidents to genetic disorder.
According to the writer, at birth the triplets’ eyes were damaged by an abnormal growth of blood vessels. To prevent a potentially lethal infection, the girls were given a cocktail of antibiotics which damaged the follicles that is responsible for hearing and balancing the lining of the inner ear. It was months after their birth that Liz found out that her daughters were also deaf. Before the girls third birthday they were given cochlea implants to help them with their hearing but the triplets showed little response to this. Liz life changed after the birth of her triplets who were not born normal.
The writer states that test showed that the triplets have normal intelligence but sensory deprivation has severely delayed their development. The triplets did sign language, but at various levels and were not able to do much. Little words were uttered from the girls.
