Deanna Sellnow's Popular Culture

Popular Culture Deanna Sellnow clearly explains the idea of popular culture in her article “What is Popular Culture and Why Study It?”. Popular culture is a very difficult concept to understand. After reading Sellnow’s article however, pop culture is simply just how people’s lives should apparently be. People watch television shows and see the families and think thats how their family should be or they see the actor’s actions and think thats how they should act as well. Popular culture is just an assumption of how people should act, think, or believe. The TV show Modern Family is a perfect example of popular culture persuasion. The title itself makes viewers think that that is how families should be because it is apparently a modern family.
The show has a gay couple in it that adopts a baby girl. Young people especially can be influenced by this because they may not yet fully understand the situation and can get the idea that it is okay for two males to get married and adopt a baby girl. That is just one example of pop culture and how it can persuade people. Popular culture persuades people what is right and wrong according to the article. It is very easy to fall into the footsteps of others and doing what they are doing instead of what you believe individually. Just because everyone else is dressing one way does not mean that it is the right thing to do. People are influenced by what others do in public, TV, or on the internet and that is exactly what popular culture is.
