Dear Robert Scott,
I am a freshman from Seguin High School in Seguin Texas; I feel that the Texas education system is corrupt that we as students are learning to test and not to actually learn. We as students retain information for short periods of time to take a test then forget which is one of the reasons I feel that the United States of America is falling behind in the education system. However Texas does not have to be like the rest we need to take away a lot of the tests and not learn to test but learn the information we’re being taught. Not by rushing us to hurry and take a test. Now I understand that we are trying to catch up to the rest of the world however by rushing us students we are not learning to learn but learning to retain information in short bursts to take a test. However I am not saying that tests should be taken away we do need check point but at Seguin High School we are taking state CBA ,s every week or every other week .When I feel that we as students feel that we should not be monitored every second of the day. When a new employee is hired are they assigned tests to show their improvement? No. it is based upon their performs however there are teachers who will give students grades that they didn’t earn so yes there should be two checkpoint tests year but not to determine whether the student passes or fails just to determine where everyone stands and how to alter curriculum. Please respond back DISCIPLINE
On the discipline note I feel that discipline is not harsh enough. At Seguin High School in Seguin Texas the students will be punished by a referral how ever after so many times it means nothing they just say “so I don’t care fine I will go to A school I don’t care it doesn’t affect me” I have heard this with my own ears and I strongly feel that some other discipline should be brought in for example physical labor cleaning as in cleaning various

Michelle Obama once said, “If my future were determined just by my performance on a standardized test, I would not be here. I guarantee you that.” Standardized testing began a long time ago in China. It was a basic form to determine the eligibility for positions in the government of the ruling class. A standardized test is an analysis that is overseen and scored in a scheduled manner. In 2001 President George W. Bush passed the ‘No Child Left Behind’ education reform which expanded the state mandated standardized testing and assesses the schools performance. Standardized testing is not a proper way to measure the abilities of students. Students will take so many standardized tests that they become…

These test only show the students’ performance the day of the test and not the overall growth of the student over the year. The standardized test does a disservice to both the teacher who worked hard to help their students grow and the student who worked extremely hard over the course of the year and improved tremendously, but failed to pass the test. Many people would argue that teacher and student performance should be evaluated on growth over the year instead of one single test. Many of these students are smart and understand the content, but it does not show on the test. Also many students develop test anxiety which causes stress on the students which leads to negativity directed at school and learning in general. In a picture the teacher says “For a fair selection everybody has to take the same exam: Please climb that tree”. The students he is talking to are a money penguin, elephant, fish, seal, and a dog. Based on these animals only the money will be able to pass the test. This is how the government see all the students, they believe all students are the same when they are actually…

Our ancient educational system believed in enforcing discipline by force. They used to say, if you spare the rod you will spoil the child. But that view is not correct. It will produce only negative results. That is why discipline has taken a new shape in schools and colleges now. It is call self-discipline. It is discipline by acceptance, not by imposition.…

Secondly, School districts are mistreating kids. Schools and law enforcement alike treat young kids like adults. This needs to stop. A mindset of a kindergartener is not the same as a mindset of a high school student. School districts today look and treat kids and teens like criminals. I am aware that there has been a lot of violence in schools through out the years but it is wrong and pointless to hold an…

Nelson Mandela once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Still to this day this quote brings relevance to our society. From the time a child steps foot in a classroom it is imbedded into their heads that getting an education is one of the few ways to become success and have a brighter future. This pertains to be true, however at what cost? There are many problems with the education system particularly in Texas that most students, parents, and even teachers are unaware of. From underfunded budgets, to trying to persuade students from other districts changes need to be made to better the education. No changes can be made if the problems are not brought up and talked about. Education in Texas has…

Texas Education says, “If schools did not show sufficient "Adequate Yearly Progress" (AYP), they faced sanctions and the possibility of being taken over by the state or closed” ( Student Testing and Accountability ). If schools do not achieve the standards the government wants the state will take the school over and will either run the school or even close the school. The tests are other material may not show all the children's progress but the state's only care about the grades and will try and take over or possibly close school and make many people relocate. In a similar token, Texas educations states, “By the time she resigned her post in Oct. 2010, she had fired 600 teachers and dozens of principals, closed 23 schools” ( Student Testing and Accountability). The state had fired 600 teachers, dozens of principals and closed down 23 schools. The state had decided it was necessary to close schools and fire large amounts of people just because their standardized test scores were not high enough for their expertise.Procon.org claims, “These assessments carry important consequences for students, teachers and schools: low scores can prevent a student from progressing to the next grade level or lead to teacher firings and school closures” ( Background of the Issues-Standardized Testing ). The standardized tests have a major impact on students and teachers. The tests affect the students since if they don't pass they can be prevented from moving to the next grade and then this transfers over to the teachers who may be fired or demoted because of the grades. Standardized tests can affect individual's future life. Many students who fail a state or final exam makes them extremely discouraged and may affect the way they carry themselves into the next school years. When it comes to special education, discipline is a major concern in this area because many students are incessantly being expelled for their behavior issues that are caused by their disabilities. With the previous law students were excluded from school and received long suspension time because of their behavioral problems but when the new law was passed in 2004 students that are disable, is entitle to a free appropriate education under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and can no longer be expel from school if their behavior is due to their disability. With the new law, students can no longer be suspended for more than 10 days during a school term for behavioral issues and 45 days for weapon and illegal drugs. A Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA) should be included within the special need students Individualized Education Plan (IEP) at the beginning of each school year so that the general education teachers is aware of the students behavioral problems and is able to handle them before the student get out of hand and the other students learning is disruptive. If students know what is expected of them in the beginning, I believe that they will try to keep their behavior under control especially when they are in a more controlled and structure classroom.…

Standardized testing has become the focus of modern school reform since the implementation of the No Child Left Behind law in 2002 (Evans 1). The act was designed to hold all public schools to a high standard of education, measured by the results of students’ test scores on statewide standardized tests. Not all students are good test takers, and not all careers require the ability to take traditional tests in order to be successful on the job. A significant number of students nowadays would care much about standardized tests. This is because students feel like they must worry about a test which directly affects their grades and ability to learn. Standardized tests place a heavy weight on students that can lead to stress, take up instruction timing, and students won’t be able to learn anything from them.…

In doing so it hurts individual student’s education and it restricts the overall learning environment. Due to the pressure on teachers to prepare students for the STAAR or TAKS they may feel forced to “teach to the test.” Teachers may feel they are precluded from teaching their academic subjects outside of the narrow framework dictated by the standardized tests. Additionally, “teaching to the test” creates stress on both the teacher and the student to meet expected scores on the test. Sandy Kress, a Texas lawyer and former aide to President Bush aide, helped write the No Child Left Behind Act. Last week Kress stated in an interview “You’ve got drilling and benchmark testing every six weeks. Clearly, there’s a lot of over-testing in a lot of places. It’s just awful, and it draws really negative reactions from parents, teachers and communities. Tests weren’t intended to be treated that way” (“Bush, Obama focus on standardized testing leads to ‘opt-out’ parents’ movement”). Fortunately, recent actions in Texas have attempted to improve the testing environment by reducing the number of required tests each student must take. In March 2013 a bill was introduced in the Texas Senate to reduce the number of required annual standardized tests from 15 per student to five exams in core subjects (“Standardized Testing Reduced for Testing…

One of two things must occur, teachers should monitor students progress within the year to ensure that they are continuing to make progress or government should continue to use standardized testing as a method to compare students to their peers. However, standardized testing often causes additional stress and anxiety in students. Also, standardized testing is not fair to all students, because some students come from diverse cultures where English is not the dominant language. Standardized testing is not the best way to track students yearly progress because often students develop stress and anxiety, and they often do not retain the information they are taught at the last minute before the test. In conclusion, standardized testing causes unnecessary added stress and anxiety in students and therefore it should no longer be used as a progress tracking system for…
