Hope is the very essence of humanity. Without hope, without a “balm in Gilead,” what is the point of life? There is no greater punishment than the total loss of hope; the absence of hope is hell. In Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven,” the “ghastly grim and ancient” (46) Raven destroys the narrator in a way far more tortuous than a simple slit to the throat.…
Ralph Emerson once wrote, "Talent alone cannot make the writer. There must be a man behind the book." Edgar Allan Poe acquired the ability to write Gothic horror through the tragedies that existed in his life. At three years old Poe lost his mother and father. Grief and sadness overwhelmed Poe's childhood and eventually his literary style. "By temperament and mournful personal experience, Poe was drawn into the contemporary cult of death" (Kennedy 111-33.) In his shocking and lurid tales of horror, "The Masque of the Red Death," "The Tell-Tale Heart," and "The Cask of Amontillado," Edgar Allan Poe reveals his obsession with death and suffering through the development of his characters and the shocking situations he exposes.…
“The Raven” by Edgar Allen Poe is a poem that was written during the Romantic period. It depicts the story of a young man mourning over the loss of his love, Lenore. One night he was reading “forgotten lore” as a way to rid his mind of his lost love. But as he was reading, he heard a “rapping at his chamber's door” which at first reveals nothing when he goes to investigate the noise. But when the noise arises again, he goes to check and it is a Raven, who just sits “On a bust of Pallas above the door”. Then, he begins to ask the Raven questions. He asks whether or not he'll be reunited with his love again in Heaven, to which the Raven replies, “Nevermore.” Before he begins inquiring about his lost love, he notices a strong smell of perfume and begins to call himself a wretch, thinking he's gone crazy. He realizes that it is the Raven's doing. This enrages the narrator and he begins to call the Raven a “thing of evil” and a “prophet”. At the end, the narrator admits that his soul is trapped under the raven's shadow and shall be lifted, “Nevermore.”. This poem is a fantastic representation of life in America during the 1800's. During the Romantic period, it validated strong emotion, placing emphasis on emotions like apprehension, horror and terror, and awe. In “The Raven”, you can see that Poe was putting emphasis on awe, as the narrator was amazed by the Raven at first.…
In this essay, I will discuss the elements involved and my interpretation of the poem The Raven, by Edgar Allen Poe. Many poems, including this particular one, are made up of a number of elements which are combined to give the reader a certain thought or feeling. I will also discuss the poet's philosophy on poetry and how this plays a role in The Raven.…
Poe utilizes the raven as a means of placing a dark tone on his poem when the narrator asks if “[he] shall clasp a sainted maiden whom the angels name Lenore-/ Clasp a rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore” (94-95). The raven responds with “‘Nevermore’” (96). The widower questions the raven if he will ever get the chance to hold his wife again, and the raven replies that he will not, showing Poe’s tone of despair and misery. On the other hand, Poe creates a hopeful tone in “Annabel Lee” when, at the end of the poem, the narrator says, “And neither the angels in Heaven above/ Nor the demons down under the sea/ Can ever dissever my soul from the soul/ Of the beautiful Annabel Lee” (30-33). Declaring that even death cannot tear him and his love apart, the narrator believes that their souls will forever be together, no matter if she is in Heaven or Hell. This is much unlike “The Raven” in which the widower learns that he will never see his wife again. Poe’s tone in “Annabel Lee” provides a more peaceful atmosphere regarding the death of a loved one than that of “The Raven”. Both poems illustrate the ambiguities and uncertainties that that surround the death of a loved one and offer reactions to such…
Conspiracy, unkindness, and death are a few words associated with one of the most popular birds in the world. The raven is commonly seen in works of art, literature, and movies to set the tone or scenario for things that are coming next. In Poe’s, “The Raven”, the ebony bird symbolizes grief upon the man who is trying to forget his recent lost love, Lenore. The raven represents loneliness, void, and demise from the moment he tapped on the window until the bird spoke for the last time.…
Before starting this journey on Edgar Allan Poe's universe, there is nothing better than to dig deep into the events and things that caused Edgar to be one the greatest dreamers and visionaries of the world. One could spend months or even years discussing and trying to decode Poe's mind, but in the end, his words on paper talk louder and clearer than any study or papers written by Professors of renowned institutions, of course, their studies over Edgar's work are well appreciated, but no one will ever truly understand him. Such different emotions, such pain, such suffering which somehow, mixed together created the perfect recipe for marvelous tragedies. Just as Poe wrote in his poem "The Raven" : "Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing , doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before." He dreamed things that his contemporaries could not, in their wildest dreams, imagine. Imagination, a delightful extravaganza that Poe…
In the world of poetry, one of the most well-known poems is Poe’s “The Raven.” Its famous opening line, “Once upon a midnight dreary…” (1) sets a dark and melancholy tone. It is only suitable that a poem focused on the theme of death is set at midnight on a stormy night “in the bleak December” (7). This setting perpetuates the torment felt by the narrator as the raven continues to tap on his chamber door and repeat the word “nevermore.” It also contributes to the themes of death and insanity by…
Like many of Poe's story's, no one really know the mystery behind Poe's dark and mysterious death. Within Poe's death there is two main theory's to how Poe actually died. One of the theories to Poe's death is that Poe died from alcohol. This theory explains that because of Poe being drunk he had got an illness from the cold and rain leading to a faster death. the second theory states that Poe had been bit by an animal and had died from rabies. No one knows for sure how he died and we may never know the mystery. However, I believe the well-known literary genius died from alcohol I think this because Poe was a known drinker and throughout his life you will notice that he drank more when he had been going through a death or heart break. In Poe's life at that time was when Virgina and his mother/parents had died he had also tried to love again but not work in his favor. Poe dying because of alcohol is the…

The Raven creates a sense of doom for the speaker by confirming the fact that he will never be able to get rid of his sorrow. He will always be sad as he longs for his lost love, Lenore. In the poem, there’s a part where the Speaker is irate and driven to madness by the Raven. He screams at the Raven, “Leave my loneliness unbroken! – quit thy bust above my door! / Take thy beak from out my heart and take thy form from off my door” (Poe 17). The Raven gives the Speaker despair. The Speaker tells the bird to take its beak out of his heart because the bird is deepening his pain and causing agony. It also shows how the Raven is real because the speaker sees it above his door. The bird does not literally have his beak in the Speaker’s heart but he is lying above his door, haunting the Speaker. Although the bird has no intent to cause the Speaker pain, the Speaker interprets the Raven saying “nevermore” as a way of saying his pain will never end, thus creating his own sense of…

Edgar Allen Poe led an interesting life in the early to mid-1800s, though his parents (David Poe Jr and Elizabeth Arnold Poe) died when Edgar was at the age of two, he was taken in by a John Allan who was in the business of exporting tobacco; His Sister, Rosalie was taken by William Mackenzie and his wife, while his brother Henry was left in Baltimore with his grandparents. Though Edgar Allen Poe was taken in by John Allan, they still had their disputes, primarily about Edgars’ debts that of which revolved primarily around gambling, which ended up in him being forced to withdraw from the University of Virginia after less than a year and later intentionally getting himself court-martialed and discharged from the Army and West Point Academy in…
