As a narrator Death and his poetic syntax catch the reader's attention early in the book. The period in which the book is set shows Death is an omnipresent concern and other characters face the harsh reality that their lives may meet Death next due to the time they lived in “it suffices to say at some point in time I will be standing over you” (Death and Chocolate, 4), a time of war. Making Death the narrator shows the emphasis put on war and the appreciation of lives. Death obtains all or most of his information by reading or listening into conversations such as “Papa would say a word and the girl would have to spell it aloud” (The Smell of Friendship, 72). Death being a narrator he generally would be unbiased because of his nature and connection
