A Comparison of Light Yagami and L from the Series Death Note

Death Note is an anime/manga (Japanese cartoon/comic book) series about a college student, Light Yagami, and his quest to rid the world of evil. The adventure begins when he finds what is called the Death Note. The Death Note is a book that can kill a person if that person’s name is written into it. With Light’s twisted sense of justice, he attempts to transcribe the name of every criminal in the world into the book in order to “rid the world of evil and create a just world where [he] will become a god” (Oba 20). Since his judgment is immoral, he is met with great opposition. A world class detective by the name of L becomes his biggest threat and begins to hunt Light down. The series centers on the conflict between Light and L. These two characters, though similar in some ways, are opposites, right down to the way they dress. The first character presented in the series is Light Yagami. At first, Light is characterized as a brilliant college student with a bright future ahead of him. He is depicted as a well-dressed individual with high academic ability and an excellent aptitude in sports. However, underneath his innocent appearance, he is reckless in his wish to rid the world of evil at any cost (“Light vs. L”). Once Light obtains the Death Note by chance, he uses it to kill off criminals believing that his killing of criminals will detain others from committing crimes. He firmly believes that this mass slaying of criminals is the way in which the world’s evil will cease. Though his cause to rid the world of evil is noble, his method of achieving his goal is “childish, because he has no mature understanding of right and wrong” (Oba, Obata, and Shiwawa 67). As Light kills criminals in increasing numbers, he begins to think that he is justice, and eventually assumes that he is a god. The public begins to accept him as a god as well. They give Light the

A popular topic for authors lately seems to be the decline of humanity and morals. Dystopian novels are one of the most popular genres right now. However, authors haven’t just begun to write about violence recently. Many past authors ushered in this generation by using character traits to express themes and morals. An example of this is The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connel. Connel uses character choices and tone in the story The Most Dangerous Game to express a theme of “ignorance leads to violence.”…

The film Dead man walking was not created on a true case per sea but was constructed on some true people. The personality Sister Helen was indeed based on a genuine Sister Helen Prejean. The character Matthew Poncelet was a fictitious creation manufactured on a permutation of attributes of two real inmates and their criminalities that sister Helen Prejean came in acquaintance with; they are Robert Lee Willie and Elmo Patrick Sonnier.…

shall not be taught in their schools. I oppose their decision to ban the novel. The novel exhibits lessons and teachings that are essential for one to learn in his lifetime. The novel displays concepts such as, young love, limitations of the law, and how an individual death affects a community. Additionally, themes in the novel expose messages including grief is both necessary and debilitating a painful reality, loss is inevitable, and justice is worth striving for even if one thinks he will never achieve it. This novel will help one to understand why people become deviants and murderers as well as acknowledging the importance of paying attention to the living…

    2. The theory Death speaks of in the beginning of the novel is about how people observe the colors of a day only at its beginning and ends. The day merges through a multitude of shades and intonation. Death seems to see a day not like humans, hour to hour for 24 hours, he sees the day as various colors in the sky. He makes a point to notice each one.…
