Death of the Moth.
Woolf incorporates symbolism in her essay by describing the moth as life and energy. "So simple a form of the energy" and "taken a tiny bead of pure life and decking it as lightly as possible with down and feathers, had set it dancing and zig-zagging to show us the true nature of life" quoted from the essay. Another way she incorporates symbolism is by describing the months journey to death. Woolf also describes the scenery, the horses, and the farm itself. The month had traveled from one windowsill to the other.Flying from one end to the next. Eventually it's movements become awkward. The month wasn't filled with much "life or energy". It stops flying until it can't anymore. Slowly excepting it's death after fighting it back for as long as it could.
The message in this essay is death. It eventually comes to everyone and everything. For it's stronger than the moth, stronger than life it's self. Woolf has sympathy for the moth and realizes that life is truly life precious. The month is so determined to continue living. She had tried to assist the moth by using her pencil to bring him back up but laid it down shortly afterwords. It danced around the window and continued to fight even though it had fallen down several times; it brought itself back up.

In the essay "The Death of the Moth" Virginia Woolf shows us a traditional battle between life and death. I think that all of us are moths at some points in our lives. We do something without thinking and results. The life is a journey towards death. That's why we should stop sometimes and think. Or everything will go through us and will finish nowhere. I think that this is a symbolism in Virginia Woolf's story about the moth.…

When Maria Teresa first receives her little book she addresses the fact that she now has a soul. She is concerned for it, and Maria Teresa expects changes in the coming times. It’s interesting that she now believes that she has a soul, because she writes about everything in her first little book, spilling her soul into it. Maria Teresa isn’t quite sure what it means to have a soul, and she is scared that her soul may end up like the one in the families picture of a valentine with measles. Maria Teresa writes in her little book and her soul becomes exactly as Minerva told her, a deep longing that she can never fill up. Maria Teresa writes her resolves in the little book, and she becomes more of who she is in the future, she is becoming more mature.…

“Its pendulum swung to and fro with a dull...when the minute-hand made the circuit of the face...the hour was to be stricken...the musicians of the orchestra were constrained to pause”(374). The clock is in the seventh room, once again representing death. Every time the clock strikes an hour, the musicians stop playing and all the guests stop celebrating as well. Each hour is to be struck upon as their nearness of death. As the clock struck midnight it represented the end of the day meaning the end of life. This corresponds to the theme of how death is inevitable. Edgar Allan Poe symbolizes or represents the passing of life which can represent…

Edgar Allan Poe uses death to convey his ideals. By looking at his language, one can tell his abilities to strike terror into the hearts of the readers. All of his adjectives and adverbs are very dark, sinister, and gothic. For example, the opening line of "The Raven" brought forth a very dark setting with the word "dreary". Also, "The Masque of the Red Death", uses the word "pallid", which is defined as pale, and paleness represents death (dictionary & thesaurus). In "The Raven", the story is about the man who dreads over the death of his beloved wife, Lenore. Throughout the story he wants to have the ability to see her again and pleads to a raven if he will let him, which relates to death. The raven itself symbolizes death, and declines to the character's supplication, although, they were not done intentionally. In "The Masque of the Red Death", the entire story is about death and about a pestilence called the Red Death, which takes people's lives away one by one.…

    The Lesson of the Moth

In the poem “The Lesson of the Moth” writer Don Marquis compares two different lifestyles through a free spirited moth and a logical thinking human. The moth states that it is better to be a part of beauty and excitement for one instant and then cease to exist forever and never be a part of beauty. I agree with the moth because I would much rather live a shorter life appreciating and experiencing a better connection to God’s creation and gaining a better understanding of the creator, then to have a long boring life of just sitting on the side. There are also several of examples throughout history of people dying young to the flame. For example, Mozart mastered music and toured Europe while composing several great works of music before dying at the young age of 35. Abraham Lincoln also accomplished many things before he died young. He said, “In the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years.” This means that it doesn’t matter how old you are, it’s how you actually lived your life throughout the years that counts in the end. In the Bible however, James 4:14 reminds us how precious of a gift life is “Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.” Just like the pastor from the Motorcycle accident this week, this bible verse reminds us all of how close we are to the…

    Diction In Spring

    • 680 Words

In line one she starts off by saying “Mother tried to take her life”, in this quote she refers to her mom as Mother which is a very cold and distant way to refer to one’s mom (Honum 1). She also in the first four lines uses very short sentences that give the tone of someone who is acting distant. This cold and distance syntax is what gives this stanza it winter theme. In the next stanza it goes to spring which symbolizes rebirth and moving forward. The diction used in lines 7-8 are the best example of this, because they say “Birds flew from the woods fingertips” here the word choice of woods meaning something dark and scary, as well as the fact that the birds are escaping from the woods represents getting through a horrible set back in life(Honum). The next stanza uses words like fruit, grass, and daisies which are all things associated with summer. She also uses a much longer sentence. Fall comes last and it talks about how quick things come and go like summer. “Unless it doesn’t stop, like moonlight which has no pace to speak of falling through the cedar limbs, falling through the rock”, this means that like moonlight not all things last forever that everything will eventually slip away(Honum…

What is the meaning of life?: a question that has been asked since the beginning of mankind. This question is asked in the beginning of "Spring". The narrator of the poem seems really depressed because of the way she expresses her attitude towards life. In the very beginning of this poem the narrator is asking what the purpose of life is. So from the start this poem seems to be very gloomy. We seem to ask what the meaning of life is more, when we are sad, depressed or maybe something/someone has turned against us; Like in the poem, "The Sick Rose". In this poem the narrator says, "O Rose, thou art sick! The invisible worm, That flies at night, In the howling storm." In my opinion the narrator is saying that life isn't worth living and we are all like worms in a storm. Basically he/she is saying that life is a very confusing and frustrating place sometimes. In my opinion the deeper meaning is that in reality a worm is so tiny compared to the rest of the world. When the narrator says, "That flies at night," this just emphasizes even more about how small and invisible this worm is. When it is dark outside you can hardly see anything, so it would clearly be impossible to see something invisible. I think that what this poem is trying to portray is, that we as human beings are very tiny compared to the whole world and that we as individuals are invisible. So in theory, I think that this poem is about how the narrator thinks that one person can't make a difference in life. In a way this is similar to the first poem because the author has a negative attitude towards life and does not think highly of it, "Life in itself Is nothing..." Both poems have a very negative outlook…

    Symbolism In The Raven

One literary device in the poem is symbolism. Symbolism is the practice of using a word to represent an idea. There are several symbols in the poem “The Raven”, but the main symbol is the raven itself. The Raven symbolizes the man’s memories of his wife, Lenore. The bird stands as a memory of his loneliness and misery. When the bird said “nevermore” it was more effective than the human saying it. The raven represents evil and death.…
