Death penalty The death penalty causes a lot of controversy around the world. Many people want it and many others feel that it should be completely abolished. The death penalty in my opinion should be abolished in every state in the United States and all around the world. In 2003 about 80 countries abolished the death penalty and now 140 countries have completely abolished the death penalty making up 70% of the whole world. Something that could be a substitute to the death penalty is life without parole in prison. This would stop people from being electrocuted, hung, or even killed by gas chambers. I am going to tell you why the death penalty should be completely abolished worldwide. First of it costs way more money to execute a person than to keep him or her in prison for life. A study in 2011 found that California has spent more than 4 billion dollars on capital punishment since it was reinstated in 1978. California currently spends 184 million dollars on the death penalty each year. It costs a lot of money to sentence someone to the death penalty and that’s money that could be used for resources for police departments, drug treatment programs, education, and other government services that help prevent crime. Also studies show that states without the death penalty have much lower murder rates than states that do have it. 142 men and women have been released from death row because they were wrongfully accused, some only minutes before being executed. There has been evidence that 4 men have been wrongfully executed in recent years for crimes they didn’t commit. Many family members who have lost loved ones to murder feel that the death penalty will not heal their wounds or end their pain so there’s no point of executing the murderer when he can be sentenced to life without parole and will also save more money.
