sentenced to death were innocent. Statistics show that 4.1% of defendants sentenced to death in the United States are innocent. The risk of executing an innocent person will not be eliminated if the states that allow the Death Penalty do not end it. Cameron Todd Willingham was believed to have intentionally set a fire that killed his three kids. He was put to death in 2004. The Texas Forensic Science Commission found out that the evidence was misinterpreted and it turned out that the fire was accidental. Ruben Cantu was accused of Capital murder and was sentenced to death, he was 17 years old when the crime took place. Twelve years after his death, investigator found out that he likely did not commit the murder. Execution is the ultimate, irrevocable punishment. International Academic Network for Abolition of Capital Punishment (REPECAP) founded in 2009, aimed support to create the International Commission against the Death Penalty. It’s purpose was to highlight the fact that the Death Penalty is an act of cruelty which is not tolerated by the international community.
The innocence project seeks to exonerate wrongfully convicted people from the Death Penalty by using a DNA test system to protect the innocent. Researches have not been able to provide a definitive answer about the impact of the Death Penalty to the community.
