Deb Unferth Summary
Deb Unferth makes an interesting artistic choice by placing the short story, McDonald’s, the natural conclusion to the overlying story arch, at the beginning of the piece. In fact, she furthers this choice when she offers a similar aside in the beginning of the very next chapter that summarizes the plot of the chapters to come. Unferth places the ending of the story first, giving insight into the characters perspectives in a point blank manner. Revealing in this case even the morals of the story at the beginning. Details such as these would normally be gleamed from character interactions and plot developments later in the story. Deb and George are two very different individuals. Deb is a stereotypical rebellious teenager. She is constantly

From the beginning Anne Fadiman builds suspense all the way until, she establishes the focus of the essay. Fadiman starts off from the start talking about the kid’s story, and decided to put the thesis at the end of the essay. This technique of putting the thesis gives the reader a chance to think of the thesis in their heads and presents a clearer thesis when the author states what it is she has decided her thesis to be. The whole essay builds up to the point at the beginning where the thesis is stated.…

In 1993 President William Clinton signed into law a policy that effectively bans gay, lesbian, and bisexual service in the military. This policy, Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (DADT), gave the armed forces the right to discharge a soldier based on their sexual preferences. There are two main parts to the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy. In the Don’t Ask section of the policy, a commander is not allowed to ask, and service members are not required to disclose their sexual orientation. The other part, Don’t Tell, claims a basis for discharge exists if "the member has said that he or she is a homosexual or bisexual, or made some other statement that indicates a propensity or intent to engage in homosexual acts." This act is seen as unconstitutional by many Americans and is currently hurting our military when we need it the most.…

For me, it was surprising to find out George was a prankster who liked to mess around with people. In the story he was always portrayed as a loner with no friends, but he was actually someone who was fun to be around. I wonder what made him change to not wanting anyone in his life. For example, in the book it talks about how Higginbotham would try calling him and sending letters, but none of those things worked to get George to speak to him (290). Even though it never states why George drifted apart from his friends, we were told George was a hoarder. Maybe he was too embarrassed of people figuring it out, which caused him to push people away. Whatever the case was, people in his past life “found him difficult to crack open” (Kleinfield 288). Even Frank, who was George’s friend for fifteen years, didn’t really know…

“God a ’mighty, if I was alone I could live so easy. I could get a job an’ work an’ no trouble… an’ whatta I got,’ George went on furiously. ‘I got you! You can’t keep a job an’ you lose me ever’ job I get. Just keep me shovin’ all over the country all the time. An’ that aint the worst. You get in trouble. You do bad things and I got to get you out.” (11) This presents that George has grown sick and tired of always having to take care of Lennie. George is being bothered about how Lennie is always ruining the jobs they both receive, and having to travel to another country to find a new one. George is also ranting about how life would be so easy without Lennie.…

Imagine being able to observe the motion of a red blood cell as it moves through your vein, or being able to watch as a type of white blood cell (called a "T-cell") destroys an invading microbe by engulfing it. What would it be like to observe the vibration of molecules as the temperature rises in a pan of water? To observe sodium and chlorine atoms as they get close enough to actually transfer electrons and form a salt crystal? New scientific tools, developed and improved over the last few decades, make such observations increasingly feasible. These are examples of the effort to view, measure and even manipulate materials at the molecular or atomic scale - the major focus of nanotechnology.…
