Her name was supposed to be Orpah, from the Bible, but because of the difficulty of spelling and pronunciation, she was known as Oprah. Winfrey’s parents were unmarried and separated soon after she was born, and left her in the care of her maternal grandmother. She lived in a poor lifestyle and it had a negative effect on Winfrey as a young adult, and her problems were caused by repeated sexual abuse, starting at age nine, by men that others in her family trusted. Her mother worked and did not have much time for supervision. Winfrey attended Tennessee State University on a full scholarship and majored in speech and drama. In 1976, Winfrey moved to Baltimore, where she hosted a hit television chat show, People Are Talking. Afterward, she later became the host of her own, wildly popular program, The Oprah Winfrey Show. Lee not only wrote, produced, directed, and edited the film but also played a key supporting role.
