Deceit in How Stories Came to Earth, Coyote Steals Fire, and Master Cat: Puss in Boots
Sophocles once stated, “Success is sweet, even if it comes from deception.” This truth is portrayed through three different short stories known as “How Stories Came to Earth”, “Coyote Steals Fire”, and “Master Cat: Puss in Boots”. In each of these three tales the main character spins webs of deceit by tricking people or, in some cases, animals into doing what they want them to. This includes Anansi’s act of tricking a snake into stretching himself out so Anansi could tie the snake to the stick in “How Stories Came to Earth.” Another form of deceit used, this time, in “Coyote Steals Fire” is when Coyote pretends to be dead in order to steal the fire from Thunder. In the story “Master Cat: Puss in Boots” Puss creates many empty threats to tell people so that they will lie for him. Each character obtains what he/she wishes to through a form of deception. While “How Stories Came to Earth”, “Coyote Steals Fire”, and “Master Cat: Puss in Boots” share similar tricksters who ultimately achieve their goals, they differ on the subject matters of their strategies, the benefits their tricks play on society, and the justification of their actions. Each protagonist’s form of strategy shares likenesses as well as differences. In “How Stories Came to Earth” and “Coyote Steals Fire” the strategies used are beneficial to society. The stories that Anansi acquires from the gods are then, in turn, able to be spread throughout the world. This gives everyone a chance to hear and learn tales for generations to come. In order to do all of this, Anansi cheated each animal that the gods wanted into helping him. Anansi would trick the animals into trusting him and then, right when Anansi had them in his grasp, he would trap them and take them back to the gods. When Coyote steals the fire from Thunder he creates an opportunity for a new life for everyone on earth. Before fire, people were forced to eat raw meat and to freeze during the winter, but because Coyote stole the fire, people

In her article “Rise of the Coyote: The New Top Dog,” Sharon Levy describes that coyotes need to stop being criticized as static entities and know that they are evolving rapidly. Coyotes have helped researchers understand how other mid-sized predators respond when larger carnivores are wiped out. The larger animals that are prey make the smaller animals feel that they secure in their habitat because the wild animal that could kill them, has something that could kill the predator. Coyotes have been helpful in discovering the smaller animals reactions, helping people show that not all wild animals are as harmful as they seem to be. Levy goes on to say that coyotes are interbreeding with dogs, leading to a different sort of hybrid animal.…

The Native American tale of "Coyote and Bear", originally translated from oral tradition in nineteen six by G. A. Dorsey in the book The Pawnee, Mythology, Part I, tells us the story of Coyote who accidentally meets Bear, and in order to protect himself from being killed by Bear, starts to make up self praising stories to impress Bear. Eventually, Coyote convinces Bear, but after a few hesitant moves, Bear realizes that Coyote was lying. The tale then, ends up with the murder of Coyote by Bear. The most relevant literary figure used in the tale is the trickster, which is, in the study of folklore, a god, a spirit, or simply a human hero who breaks god´s or nature´s rules, sometimes with bad intention, but usually with final positive effects. Most of the times, these broken rules take the form of tricks. Tricksters can be cunning, or foolish, or both. They are often very funny even though sometimes considered sacred. The present tale is part of the Native American oral tradition of the trickster, which is esthetically simple but considered sacred at the times, in which Coyote represents the figure of survival, who would invent any story to get away from death. Bear represents the nature, and its normal evolution of the species through the predation process. However, being myself aware of the likelihood…

In the story The Californian's Tale there is one main theme that leads to others. This main theme is evident it is love. Henry has a great love for his wife. His love was a never-ending feeling for her. "One word frees us of all the weight and pain of life: that word is love." Henry probably had such a hard time with his wife's death that he blocked it out of his mind and started to believe that she really was still there, and that she still loved him. The quote above describes why Henry had so much love for his deceased wife; it was because her death put so much pain and weight on his life. Henry was a gold miner. He came out to California to find happiness in wealth. Henrys wife loved him so much that she came out to California with him, and made an old nasty cottage a home. She was probably happy without the gold. The reason she was happy was because she was in love with Henry. She was a nineteen-year old newlywed woman who was in love. Being a nineteen-year old she missed her family. So when the newlyweds were settled in their cabin she went to visit her family. She was ambushed by a group of Indians on the way and was killed. Henry soon found out that there is only one happiness in life, and that is to love…

Lying is an everyday part of life that is used positively and negatively, but the use of either has strong moral consequence. “How Stories Came to Earth” and “Master Cat” are two compelling stories about a trickster trying to maintain a specific goal. A trickster tale is a story containing a main character who is an anthropomorphized animal that uses their wits to get what they want. Anthropomorphism is a god, animal, or object that has human characteristics. Each story has key points that have similarities to each other, such as the main characters or their determination to achieve a goal. However, some key points differentiate from those of the other, for example the techniques used to achieve the goal or the story’s perspective on women.…

"Thus I Refute Beelzy" is a mind-boggling example of a short story that compels the reader's mind to untangle the fascinating yarn that is spun by the author, John Collier. Collier wanted to send a buried message to his readers, to let them figure out what he meant on their own. Indeed, the significance of the story will be slightly different for everyone, effectively a custom story for everyone who reads it, yet the main purpose Collier had in mind prevails; that in everyone there is evil.…

    | The narrator, in making a seemingly offhanded comment about Rat’s tendency to lie, reveals another major point of the novel: the truth of a particular story is differing from person to person. Each person, with his or her own perspective, will relate or retell a story in a way they believe is befitting. While some may see this as a lie, others may see it as a necessary exaggeration of the truth in order to achieve the full meaning of the storytelling.…

“The Devil and Tom Walker” is a short story that revolves around supernatural events, nature, and challenges its own characters to change their pasts. For instance, the Devil in “The Devil and Tom Walker” is a supernatural entity who promises fortune if Tom sells his soul. The supernatural events displayed here display the emotional wishes of both Tom and his wife. He is miserable living with his wife and cannot stand her. The Devil ends up taking the soul of Tom’s wife, which prompts Tom to feel “…gratitude towards the black woodsman, who he considered had done him a kindness” (“Washington Irving”). The Devil is able to successfully take action on the inner emotions and desires of the others characters in a way only a supernatural entity could and reality could not. Furthermore, Nature is prevalent in “The Devil and Tom Walker” because many Romantic writers believed that nature provided good emotions as compared to the ugly emotions caused by urbanization. Irving uses nature to connect the real world with the imaginative and supernatural world and adds human elements to nature to romanticize them. The devil presents himself to Tom as “… the Wild Huntsman in some countries; the Black Miner in others. In this neighbourhood I am known by the name of the Black Woodsman.” (“Washington Irving”). Irving uses nature to describe the Devil to blend in the supernatural entity of the Devil to the romantic aspects of nature. Finally, the Romantic tenet of challenging characters to change their own pasts is rampant throughout “The Devil and Tom Walker”. The Devil loved his reputation and sought to lengthen his legacy by seeking out individuals and taking their souls. Tom was a greedy man, who wanted money over anything else. When the oppurtunity of seizing this fortune presented itself to Tom, he took advantage of it, even if that meant taking money from poor, innocent farmers later in his…

An example of when Master Cat used his intelligence would be when he told his master to go for a swim in the river. When the King drove past the river, Master Cat acted as if his master was drowning. By doing this he created a scenario in which he could come up with a reasonable explanation as to why his master was not dressed properly. Another similarity between the two stories is that in each story a significant, power figure is present. In “How Stories Came to Earth”, the power figure is the sky-god, meanwhile in “Master Cat”, the power figures would be the ogre and the king. Typically, the main character is trying to get something from the power figure. In these stories, Anansi is trying to receive the stories from the sky-god and Master Cat is trying to take the ogre’s castle, and the king's wealth and daughter. A third similarity between the two stories is that in both whatever the main character gains in culturally important. Anansi gained the stories which he in return shared with the world. These stories were then able to be knowledge to everyone and society benefited from…

Another similarity between these two trickster tales is the moral teachings. The moral teaching in “Coyote and the Buffalo” is to not be greedy. An example would be when Coyote killed the young cow for more food because he was tired of eating the fat of the young cow and as a result he gets the remains of the young cow stolen and is soon left with nothing. In “Fox and Coyote and Whale” the moral is to be helpful and selfless. An example would be when Fox and Coyote set on a quest to rescue Fox’s wife from Whale. In the end Fox ends up getting his wife back because Coyote was selfless and helpful.…

A Kind of Flying is comprised of compilation of selected short stories by Ron Carlson. The stories are mostly written in first person. Carlson writes the story in an extraordinary and sensitive way with bizarre surface happenings. The stories are filled with imaginative humorous tales with epigrammatic dialogue. In the selected four stories titled, “Bigfoot Stole My Wife,” “I Am Bigfoot,” “The Tablecloth of Turin,” and “The Chromium Hook,” describes the concept and the difference between truth and reality, and what we choose to believe and not to believe. Credibility is one of the major themes addressed in the stories. It is also emphasized that determining between what reality is and what is not is a very difficult decision. Carlson appears to give the reader the degree of truthfulness; however, most of it is in fact not true. In the “Bigfoot Stole my Wife it is not his wife’s intention to leave him, but rather believe that she is kidnapped by big foot hairy beast man. The power of credibility is addressed in all four stories. (thesis).…
