Decision Making Analysis Discussion Summary
Conflict is a characteristic of managerial decisions and Anne Mulcahy definitely had conflict within the decisions she made as CEO of Xerox. In an Internet video, Rodgers (n.d.) states that Mulcahy started with the company thirty years ago and held numerous positions in sales, human resources, and even launched a desk jet product line while rising to CEO. The conflict Mulcahy faced when she took the position as CEO was to save a company from bankruptcy that she felt was like a family. The psychological conflict must have presented its self when Mulcahy had to make hard decisions of how to cut costs. Cutting one billion dollars in the first year as CEO undoubtedly meant many people losing their jobs, and even cutting the desk jet printer product that she herself created. Employees value managers that make it to the top of the organization when they have seen what it’s like in various positions within the organization. Having that type of experience and exposure to the company from the bottom up surely allowed her to make decisions with a better understanding of how those costs cuts would affect the organization and the people within it.
Risk and uncertainty are two characteristics of managerial decision making. Anne Mulcahy took quite a risk when she made the decision to terminate shareholder dividends and eliminate jobs for the benefit of the company. Surely she often thought about the repercussions if the cost-saving strategies she executed were unsuccessful. Would she be seen as a failure? Mulcahy stood strong and did not let the risk or uncertainty taint her decision. Mulcahy brought a sense of structure to Xerox that brought the company back from the brink of bankruptcy.
