As the story progress, the author starts pointing out mainly Dee personalities. Dee is the attractive and outgoing one among her family. She considers herself as sophisticated and more knowledgeable among her family member. Dee immerges as a girl who is still struggling with her heritage and identity despite being educated. Her attitude towards Mama and Maggie was negative and would not respect
them. During the story Mama stated “She wrote me that once that no matter where we “chose to live, she would manage to come see us. But she will never bring her friends.”(Walker, Para.14). Dee was always shame of her family and does not want her friends to see her parent and always wanted to be away form home
Moreover, She is a flat character, mainly arrogant and selfish. When mama call her “Dee”, Dee replied saying that her new name is wangero that she would could no longer bear the name of the people that oppress her. Also, Dee habits were to take the family heritage collection. When she saw the quilts, which was passing by African multi-generation and made by handwork, she immediately ask mama to give her. Mama however promised them to give her sister Maggie. Dee shows her arrogant behavior toward Maggie after mama disagrees to give quilts to her. “She can have them, Mama," she said, like somebody used to never winning anything, or having anything reserved for her. "I can 'member Grandma Dee without the quilts.” (Walker, Para.74). Dee talks back to mama, as Maggie is not worthy as much as her. Despite being ignored by mama she just walk away form her home. Therefore, Alice Walker uses the incredible details to describe her story more interesting. In the story the, the character image and the plot is describe thoroughly that helps readers to understand easily.
