Deep smarts are valuable knowledge. They are developed through accumulated experience during performing a task on a particular job.According to our reference textbook, the definition of deep smart is provided as“the capacity of experts to exploit their deep knowledge of a particular practice to exercise good judgment and the “smart” interpretation of new possibilities”.(Leonard and Swap, 2004) People with Deep Smarts are the “go-to” individuals in an organization, possessed of skills and knowledge that make them valuable to their organization and their colleagues. According to a research on expertise done by Dorothy and Walter, it takes seven to ten years of focused effort to develop what we so-called deep smart.
Could deep smart be transferred?
As stated above, deep smart required a couple of years to develop. However, is it to be developed only through individual experience? As claimed by Dorothy and Walter, there are “certain characteristics, knowledge and skill that experts with deep smarts share”. That means deep smart is considered to be something which could be transferred by the expert to the junior through a process of teaching. If a junior is interested in considering his or her own deep smarts and how he or she might develop them further, he or she could acquire it through the process of learning. More specifically, deep smart could be developed more effectively through sharing and practicing.
However, in the process of acquiring deep smart, what is learned is different from what we usually learned in acquiring ordinary knowledge.To pursue for deep smart, what is learned is other’s experience, which is called tacit knowledge. Actually, thisknowledgeis to be acquired not only through verbal instruction, but is also to be paired up with personal training.
An example of deep smart – A senior police
Tom is a police who has participated in his team for five years. When he was still a junior , he was in troops of the island and needed to practice
