Even his own mother, Laurie had doubts at the end of the trial despite ridiculing at the absurdity when Jacob was first indicted. During the course, Laurie found out about Andy’s father and the idea of the “murder gene” which may have swayed her. But, when another girl named Hope disappears after the last person to see her was Jacob, her suspicions became real. As a result, she took a devastating action of trying both her and Jacob’s life because she blamed herself for not seeing the violent aspects of her son. However, she had only half succeeded because while Jacob died, she lived. This may seem crazy, but a reason Laurie may have done this was out of love. Jacob has gone through so much with being accused of the murder of Ben Rifkin and Hope Connors. Laurie did this in order to ensure that Jacob would not hurt anyone else because of his violent tendencies. Although this ending was shocking, it reminded me of Of Mice and Men, in which George shoots Lenny. George shot it after Lenny killed Curley’s wife by mistake, and this controversial decision would set Lenny free at last. This shows that Laurie would do anything, even kill her own son for his best interest so he would never hurt anyone again.
Defending Jacob, was definitely a thriller with all the exciting plot twists and the ending was just shocking. We may never know if Jacob was really innocent or not; but, we know
