Programs and policies should recognize the complexity and responsibilities within the family unit. Principle 4 is family partnership and empowerment. Policies and programs should encourage family members to collaborate in services. Family members are also an important resource in the development of policies, planning, and evaluations of programs. Principle 5 is family diversity. The principles focus on the fact that families come in many varieties. Programs and policies must acknowledge that families may be affected differently based on their cultural, and these policies does not cause harm to the many different types of families. It is estimated that over 22 million children around the world suffer from obesity, and while some factors of obesity can be heredity, the majority of factors are environmental. As a society we not only take in too many calories, we promote excessive calorie intake of unhealthy foods. In every city in the United States, one will most likely find a fast food restaurant promoting unhealthy eating habits. Our fast-paced society finds it easier and cheaper to buy this food, and then create more healthy options. Another key issue is a child’s use of technology, which has led to lack of exercise.
