Nurses should use evidence-based practice (EBP) guidelines because the evidence retrieved in them is the most current, best evidence. EBP guidelines include clinician expertise, patient preferences, and desirable patient outcomes.“EBP closes the gap between research and practice, providing more reliable and predictable care than that based on tradition, opinion, and trial and error” (Lewis, Dirksen, Heitkemper, & Bucher, 2014, p 13). EBP guidelines are central to patient’s plan of care. These guidelines are validated by many evidence-based scientific studies such as evidence findings, data from quality improvement projects, and professional organization standards. They recommend the most appropriate clinical choices, treatments, and care for…

Evaluation may be developmental, intended to deliver direction for the development and implementation of an outcome-oriented (Billings & Halstead, 2012). Evidence-based practice (EBP) is decision- making on the care delivery to patients, which is based on current identified and validated research evidence, consumers’ preferences, expert opinions and society expectation(Adams & Barron, 2010). This requires the baccalaureate nurses to make clinical decision pertaining to patient’s care. Evidence-based practice needs one to get all the available evidence on a study topic. Internal evidence is applied in diagnostic reasoning such as in data banks. Concerning the issue of patients with ventilation-caused pneumonia, the nurse opts to visit institutions to gain evidence. On the other hand, external evidence is found in scientific studies and randomized control trials. This type of evidence is found from outside sources other than records from hospital facilities. Internal evidence enables standardization of the practice. However,…

Evidence-based practice (EBP) has been emphasized since the publication of the Institute of Medicine’s report “To Err Is Human”. Nurses should be able to not only provide standard care within the scope of practice but also deliver safe care based on the best EBP that is most up-to-date at that time. Furthermore, research is developed based on the current evidence-based practice. Research nurses work on new projects to conceptualize innovative ideas, generate literature research, and conduct clinical trials to develop new evidence-based practice. The reason why evidence-based practice and research are important is because health…

I think that evidence based practice is a very important aspect of nursing that should drive treatment, policy and procedure. Even though evidence based practice is informative and provides the best or leading theories to better our patients there doesn’t seem to be a standard to when evidence based practice is rolled out throughout different hospital systems. Some hospitals are using the latest and greatest methods for treating patients and some hospitals are years behind. Why is it that there isn’t a set standard on how long a hospital has to transfer to the new method and why don’t hospitals push to be using the best known care for their patients to improve outcomes. We as nurses should want to provide the best care to our patients as possible and it seems that the standard of care varies widely between different hospitals and hospital systems without an easy way for patients to be able to discern which ones are using evidence to drive their treatment.…

Nurses are responsible in providing holistic, quality care to their clients. In order to effectively provide such care Boswell and Cannon (2009, p. 2 & 7) states that nurses must base their provision of care on the most current, up-to-date health information available and sound nursing knowledge. This is where evidence-based practice (EBP) comes in. Polit and Beck (2010, p. 4) defined EBP as "the use of the best clinical evidence in making patient care desicions". This usually comes from research conducted by nurses and other healthcare professionals. Thus it is pertinent that research reports are critically analyzed.…
