Defining Otherness in the Literary Work, This Is What It Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona
In Sherman Alexie’s short story, “This is What it Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona”, we see a clear depiction of Otherness between the characters, Victor and Thomas-Builds-the-Fire. This story is about a boy named Victor, who recently lost his father to a heart-attack. Strapped for cash, he is forced to rely on the Tribal Council to fund the retrieval of his father’s remains in Phoenix. However, the council is unable to meet his request and due to financial constraints can only provide one hundred dollars. While standing in line to cash the check, he finds help in the form of a past childhood friend named, Thomas-Builds-the-Fire, the Other. Right away, we note from the author’s statements, “All the other Indians stared, surprised that Victor was even talking to Thomas. Nobody talked to Thomas because he told the same damn stories over and over again. Victor was embarrassed…” (Alexie 1994), that Thomas is the Other in this story. Although the youth of the reservation has ostracized Thomas, due to his repetitive stories, and his consistent habit of talking to himself, Victor is hopeful that Thomas can help him. Thomas approaches Victor to offer his condolences for his father’s death and to offer Victor help. Before the chance to ask how Thomas knows of his father’s death, Thomas says, “I heard it on the wind. I heard it from the birds. I felt it in the sunlight.” This is an example of the stories that Victor and his peers refer to. These stories are part of the reason that no one talks to Thomas. They don’t understand Thomas, therefore they are unwilling to accept him. What Victor doesn’t realize, but later learns on his journey with Thomas to Phoenix, is that Thomas dreamt of his father and also promised his father that he would look after Victor no matter what happened. The author clearly establishes in this story that Otherness is present, and that the character Thomas recognizes his social unacceptability, but he and Victor set this aside in order to

“To Build a Fire” is a naturalist’s view of the harsh peril that the Yukon can hold. The characters were all in the Yukon and each had different fates due to the willingness to accept the rules of such a harsh climate. The tone and mood help set up such a naturalistic story where one should not trifle with nature. Throughout the story the main character fights himself and the elements to try to survive. “To Build a Fire” by Jack London shows how the dismissal of knowledge and experience due to self-confidence creates arrogance.…

The movie began with the incident of the Thomas’ parents’ death. It was the fourth of July and his parents had a party and everyone was either drunk of asleep. Victor’s father Arnold walked around drunk with a sparkler and threw it in the kitchen. Everything quickly caught on fire and Thomas was thrown out the window where he was caught by Arnold. It quickly fast forwards to where Thomas had grown up to be a skinny, story-telling nerd and Victor a buff Indian. Constant flashbacks of Victor’s childhood are shown during the movie. Victor’s father was an angry drunk and would always beat him and his mother. One day, his mother decided to sober up for him and that was also the same time his father left. Victor then found out that his father had passed away in Phoenix, Arizona, thus began his journey with Thomas and the discovery of why his father really left. On his journey, he met a trailer mate of his dad’s named Suzy, who told him stories that his dad had told her about him. She revealed to him about the innocent mistake his father had made by killing Thomas’ parents in the fire. She also encouraged him to stop being stubborn and try to find something valuable in his father’s trailer. Throughout their journey, Thomas and Victor’s relation hadn’t improved until they got into a car accident in which the white man blames them for the incident. Victor was also charged with assault after the accident, but it was dropped because there wasn’t much of a case. In the end, he found the real reason to why his father left and is thankful for Thomas.…

Throughout the novel, Thomas demonstrates his heroism through instances that illustrate his curiosity. He does not understand the Gladers way of life, or even why they ended up in a mysterious world called the Glade. “Strangely enough, he felt his fear whisked away like a swarm of gnats, caught in the wind, replaced by an intense curiosity. He wanted to know where he was and what was happening.” (Dashner 2). This quote shows that Thomas is curious because he wakes up in an elevator and has a very vague memory of his former life. He wonders how he got to…

The first two stages of life are childhood and adolescence. Victor and Thomas went through both changes in the movie ¨Smoke signals¨. In the movie Victor's father was an alcoholic, this made Victor's mom very mad and she told him that he can't keep using all the money. Victor’s childhood stage was hard because his father had left him and his mother all alone. Victor looked up to his father very much. In the scene his father left Victor came running out of the house yelling “don't leave dad, don't leave.” This shows that victor loved his father and trust in him. Another example of childhood from the movie was the fire on fourth of july. The fire was a big part of victor's and Thomas life because his father is the one started the fire that killed thomas family.…

Victor almost seems to admire Thomas, because Thomas doesn’t care what other people think about him. Although Victor wants to escape from the standards of the white people, he still conforms to their culture because he is afraid of ridicule. However, Thomas doesn’t let other peoples’ opinions affect him, and Victor is jealous of his nonchalant attitude towards other people. “Everyone has dreams about flying. Thomas flew,” (70). Thomas has confidence in himself, which is something that most everyone else in the reservation seems to lack. When Victor sees Thomas’s confidence, he begins avoiding Thomas, perhaps because of jealousy, or possibly because he is afraid of what other people might think about Victor if they see him with Thomas. When Thomas and Victor are returning to Spokane Reservation in “This is What It Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona,” Thomas says, “I know you aren’t going to treat me any differently than before. Your friends would give me too much shit about it,” (74). Victor is too caught up in the modern world to possibly understand the importance of Thomas’s stories, and Thomas understands Victor’s limitations. However, at the end of “This is What it Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona,” Victor agrees to listen to one of Thomas’s stories just once. This symbolizes Victor’s step backwards towards the traditions and stories of Native Americans in the…

We find out that the creature is alive when Victor says, “when, by the glimmer of the half-extinguished light, I saw the dull yellow eye of the creature open; it breathed hard, and a convulsive motion agitated its limbs.(40)” He doesn’t want anyone to know what he has done even though he knows that keeping the monster is not good. The monster ends up killing Victor’s wife, best friend, and his youngest brother. The monster also accidentally kills Victor’s father and 2 other people. Dominick Birdsey is a man with many issues. He is angry at the world, and refuses to forgive anyone, including himself. Thomas, his identical twin brother, is one person who has hurt him in many ways. The fact that Thomas and their mother got along well, better than he and their mother did, was very upsetting to Dominick. Dominick felt that “Ma would always love him (Thomas) more than she loved me” (763). Dominick thought his mother loved Thomas more because they were alike. “In some ways, they were more like identical twins than he and I were” (814). Dominick believed that she “loved him more” because “both of them were so goddamned powerless…. It was like they were soul mates” (815). This is shows that Dominick was mad at his twin brother, Thomas. He wanted his mother’s love and approval, but she was always seemed closer to Thomas because of their similar personalities.…
