Sportsmanship
Sportsmanship is fairness in following the rules of the game but it does not mean only taking part in sports and playing the game with rules but also playing the game with passion. A true sportsman is who observes all the rules in the game, someone who has achieved skill and proficiency in a specific sport. Someone who shows spirit during the games, character is shown on the field. Fair play is another way of showing good sportsmanship, one must always be fair in one’s dealings with others. Fairness and honesty are some qualities that must be shown on the field, a team should not cheat others. Respect for discipline is an essential part of sportsmanship. Good sportsmanship is like the golden rule of sports. Team spirit is another important element of sportsmanship. In games the players must cooperate with one another if they wish to be successful in a match. Without co-operation, success is impossible. One reason that sportsmanship is important is the fact that it promotes healthy relationships with your peers. Many spectators come to enjoy the competitiveness and excitement of high school athletics. Cheap shots and verbal attacks on athletes can forever stay in their mind, that’s why it is vital that sportsmanship is emphasized from a very young age. Throughout my freshmen and sophomore year I played an specific sport and that is football but it is not the football you’re thinking, it’s soccer, America the one place in the world where they call football “soccer”, however, in my freshmen year we faced an stupendous team, Carmel. We went to their home turf and Carmel began with their racist remarks, our coach told us to remain calm, the only way we can strike back without harming anyone is by playing our game and leaving victorious against Carmel, by halftime we were down 3-nil, they outscored us in the first half, but in the second half we comeback and we take the lead 4 to 3. I still remember the last play, the striker from our team shot the ball and it went in and we took the lead 5 to 3. The game ends and one of the Carmel players told me “good job, you guys did not give up”. Probably not all teams had good sportsmanship but at least one had the courage to tell me that even though earlier in the game he was one of many with the irrelevant side comments. I will never forget that game, in football season he saw me and recognized me and said “goodluck”, after the game was over I realized why he said that. If you win, that’s great, if another person does, you need to be happy for them and look forward to the next competition. Sportsmanship sets an example for spectators like children. Kids are very observant at a young age, so when they see a varsity athlete yell at an official or get into a fight during the contest, they are easily affected. However, if they notice that all of the players involved are very polite, they are more likely to act the same around other people. The spirit of sportsmanship shows cheerfulness even in the face of a defeat. When two teams play a match, the loser does not cherish any grudge against the winner. In fact the loser congratulates his opponent on his success and shakes hands with him. Fair play, respect for discipline and recognition of the need for teamwork and cheerfulness even in the event of defeat are the dominant aspects of good sportsmanship. Sportsmanship is worthy of admiration.

Sportsmanship means to have fair behavior to other players or the opposing team. Of course sportsmanship should involve the encouragement to any other person on the team. Sportsmanship sometimes includes a gracious act when losing a game. Instead of complaint and saying negative things to a person on the other team they would say, "Good Job," or "Good Game." Sportsmanship is involved in the book, Tangerine; they have good examples and show other people or readers of that book how to have good sportsmanship. Two main different types of sportsmanship are bad and good. They both are introduced in the book and show us that in every single game there has to be a type of sportsmanship. Whether it is good or bad they should be one. In the book, Tangerine, it shows us bad sportsmanship and kind of explains it. Then they show us good and explain that, making it a good main point for school Part 2. In the novel tangerine it reads, "We were all more relaxed before this game, except for Victor. He was already talking trash to some of the Kinnow middle school players, reminding them about something that had happened last year. They were giving it right back to him, saying stuff like, 'Hey, Guzman, why are you on the girls' team? Couldn't you make the boys' team?“ This shows us that the sportsmanship is a negative one and that they don't really help one another. Instead of playing fair they play bad and mean which caused the team to be in a bad…

Team sports contribute a lot in character development. The word “TEAM” can be expressed to mean (Together, Everyone, Achieves, More). For a better understanding of how team sports builds good character, we will define the word “character”. In the world today, the word “argument” is used on a daily basis and usually carries a bad meaning. In fact, the word is used so much that people often mistaken it’s true meaning. According to the book Writing Arguments by John Ramage, John Bean and June Johnson, there is no universally accepted definition of “argument.” The meaning of the term is rather complex, and it has been remained a controversial issue of philosophers and rhetoricians over the centuries (2). Because of the complexity of the word, we need to examine three important points in order to understand what “argument” truly meant: the misconceptions about the meaning of argument, the features of argument, and the relationship of argument to the problem of truth.…

Overskeid (2008) states that although Cognitivism has been in the forefront of psychology for decades, its position has weakened in recent times. Psychologists and neuroscientists who were cognitivists are now rediscovering that understanding behavior is necessary. Cognitivism is an unobservable mental phenomenon according to Overskeid (2008). B. F. Skinner’s example (e.g. 1977, 1990) of behaviorism rejected the cognitivists due the fact that by not seeing the reinforcement process, cognitive psychologists could not gain the understanding of the consequences that either strengthen or weaken a behavior. Cognitivism focuses on the mind and the study of the brain. The thinking process is the major idea looked at with this theory. Critical thinking, problem solving, decision-making and creative thinking are all part of this process (Williams, 1999). Social Cognitivism and behavior modification can be over…

Forgiveness by the World English Dictionary is the “act of forgiving; state of being forgiven, disposition or willingness to forgive”. But what does it really mean? That is my question. Is being able to forgive and not forget the same thing? In my life, I have found that true forgiveness is a quality that separates us from other species and it is what makes us human. In order to truly and sincerely forgive, one must, aside from saying they have forgiven the person, let it go and not hold a grudge against that person. Just, as Mahatma Gandhi once said: “The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong." I believe that holds to be true.…

This season wasn't just any season though. We had a new coach, and we were also playing competitive soccer. What was competitive soccer? Well it's a lot different than our normal soccer. Instead of playing the local teams, such as Elkins, Lewis, or Bridgeport, we got to play in huge tournaments and against teams far away from here. The game was also a lot more intense; I remember the first game, against Glenwood's team. It was totally different than anything I have seen, we were getting to play at a college, and against a soon-to-be known rough team. We had started the game, and man these guys were violent. We started to retaliate, and my friend's dad was the center referee. I sure would have hated to be in his shoe, that’s for sure. It didn't even phase me how crazy soccer was this year until one of the Glenwood players spit at our coach's feet, and got tossed from the game. We soon learned to live with this violence, and we even participated in it more than anyone would probably admit to, but after all of the beat downs we had received from the other…
