Definition Essay
Humility is the “quality or state of not thinking you are better than other people” (Longman).Humility allows us to be caring of others without proudness or arrogants. With any word, there are many definitions and thoughts of the true definition, from the latin and greek meanings to what buddhist and christians believe is humility. However, one thing that is common in all is that humility is a virtue of honesty and unpretentiousness that every person has to ability to achieve but only if they are accepting of themselves.

not being self centered. According to the Online Etymology Dictionary the word humility derives from the latin humilitatem which is a lowness, insignificance, and meekness(Harper). Also deriving from the latin humilis which means lowly and humus meaning dirt low. Although these are very broad meanings to what humility means today they signify the roots of what the word has grown into. Lowly and dirt low can be expressed as being down to earth, without pretension ousness, or in other words ones genuine loving self.
Humility also has many values and meanings for christians in the bible.
According to James Orr, General Editor of the International Standard Bible Encyclopedia “biblical humility is grounded in the character of god” (Humility), in order to enter God's kingdom one must be humble first. Christians believe in a pure soul without any regrets and dishonesty, being humble entitles a person as wealthy and honored and full of wisdom. Christians themselves believe that God was humble himself in making their world and that he “humbled himself as a servant”(Humility). On the other hand for buddhist, humility is more of a virtue than a character of god. Being on the ten sacred qualities attributed to Buddha of Compassion” (Yu-Hsi). In buddhism being self centered and prideful is nothing that will get them to spiritual liberation, only the humble ones can take the path of enlightenment. They must respect others and show interest without jealousy or an impulse to show …show more content…
off.
Although humility is a great virtue to have being too humble can lead to being taken advantage of and not being treated with respect.
epistemic humility is being able to “understand the limit for the ability that we know as human beings, especially for things that are hard to quantify or measure” (Longman). Although being humble is a great thing to have some might use this humbleness to their advantage and make a humble person do more for them. The best would be to have a balance of both bravery and humility to create a perfect share of both worlds, being proud and confident while also not being greedy.
There have been many ways humility has been defined differently in cultures and lifestyles. Even if it has many little meanings one thing for certain is how humility is important to all groups of people. Not only being humble but also being grounded and self confident in ones mind and body to be able to understand the importance of humbleness in oneself. Humility allows a person to understand themselves and appreciate
others.
