Definition Essay On Determination
Vince Lombardi once said, “The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand.” Determination can be a characteristic used to describe someone based on their actions. Unlike other words that describe a person determination has a positive connotation attached to it. Every individual has a unique combination of characteristics that make up who that person is and what their work ethic or style is. The most common definition for determination is the unwillingness to give up or quit on a goal that is difficult to achieve (“Merriam-Webster”). All these words help make determination into a strong and empowering word. In life every individual goes through trials and tribulations but that does not mean that individual is a failure. Determination is known for all the positive qualities it carries. This word is used often to compliment individuals who give it their all when given a task. Determination can overcome raw talent and skill any day when evaluating the pros and cons of any situation. In conclusion, determination is defined in many ways but is mainly known for the unwillingness to give up on a task no matter how hard it is. Not accepting failure and not quitting a challenging task means the person is to succeed despite the obstacles in front of

In the world of art, the photograph has conventionally been used to establish original subjects that document and reflect cultures as accurately as possible. However, in Philip Gefter’s essay, “Photographic Icons: Fact, Fiction, or Metaphor”, Gefter points out that, “just because a photograph reflects the world with perceptual accuracy doesn’t mean it is proof of what actually transpired. (208)” What Gefter is telling us is that it is that the ordinary reality of the image is not what is important; the metaphoric truth is the significant factor. What makes photojournalism essential is that it helps show us how to view the world in an individualized way. It is, essentially, a public art, and its power and importance is a function of that artistry. From the war photography of Mathew Brady (who was known for moving dead bodies to create a scene) to Ruth Orkin (who directed a second shot to capture “American Girl in Italy”, when the first “real” shot was not to her liking), Gefter underscores that, although these shots are not the unedited version of life,…

In assessing a leader, their use of determination can help prove if they are average or superior. Determination is firmness in purpose and having a fixed intention. Individuals who are determined are motivated and can get things done under any circumstance; being able to do that is crucial to being an effective leader. An example of a determined leader would be George Washington. During the Revolutionary War he took on the role of commanding the continental army; when things were looking bleak his determination led him to make a decision to lead a surprise attack, which was a major turning point in the war. Even though things were tough, he did not give up or let his objective slip away.…

c.) Persistence -- A specialized knowledge or skill is not required to persevere. Perseverance is something anyone can learn. Persistence enables us face challenges and overcome obstacles. “As long as I kin wake up, I’m gonna git up”. Persistence comes with a shift in our awareness followed by change in our behavior. It encourages one to forge ahead and push harder not paying attention to circumstance. “I found myself in an endeavor that would take me beyond even my wildest aspirations”. Entrepreneurship is not “get rich quick” and expecting it to be easy; the secret is sheer perseverance and determination. Then our efforts would be rewarded. “somehow, I feel the failure ignited my uncles passion for his next endeavor :his success at the ice house”.…

There are a few different factors that play into courage when it comes to persistence and enthusiasm. Character strengths or the big picture is just one of many. Character strengths are defined as virtues, for example, the virtue of wisdom which can be achieved through strengths such as creativity, curiosity, love of learning, open mindedness, and perspective (Peterson and Seligman, 2004). Most virtues are the core characteristics that are valued by thinkers and philosophers. Wisdom, courage, humanity, justice, temperance, and transcendence are just to name a few of the characteristics. Without courage most people would not have the persistence or enthusiasm to complete anything in life. Courage would almost be considered a guideline to have the want to get anything done. Courage gives people the push when things go wrong. To sum up courage when it comes to persistence and enthusiasm, courage give people the push they need to get things done, to strive not only for excellence, but to become number one.…

In “The Glass Castle” we see many different possibilities pertaining to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. We see the father, Rex and one of the daughters, Maureen, who fall victim to Maslow. Then there’s Jeanette and the mother, Rose Mary who have both seemed to achieve self-actualization regardless of their hardships. Traditionally, Maslow’s Hierarchy is thought to be achieved by working up from the bottom of the pyramid to get to the top. However, in “The Glass Castle” this is not particularly true. All the characters mentioned in this essay lacked safety and security, love and belonging, and psychological needs at some point during the novel. How they handled this though varies. “The Glass Castle” gives you a different view on this topic altogether. We see that whether or not Maslow’s Hierarchy is achieved, depends solely on the individual themselves.…

In my life I have overcome obstacles and shown persistence as well. There was a time when my determination stuck out the most. It was the high school county cross country meet. As a freshman I ran junior varsity, and was excited to know I would be leading the race. Once the gun went off I was not surprised to see only the trail and the bike before me. The race was going well but in the second mile it took a turn for the worst. A coach from a rival team pointed me in the wrong direction, and I led the top runners with me. Once I realized what had happened and that I was no longer in first place, I felt defeated. Others around me collapsed and dropped out of the race. My persistence kept me going. Emotionally and physically drained from the extra mile, I finished in 50th place. But I did not give up and I made…
