Success is not something you can see or point to therefore everyone has a different concept to what success means. Upon being asked, "What is success?" I automatically thought that was a no brainier. Until I attempted to write my paper. I was at a loss for the correct approach to my answer. According to Ralph Waldo Emerson, the answer to that question has many different answers and there is not one right answer. However, I belief in order to have success you must have God in your life because success is definitely "a result or an outcome" or "an event that accomplishes its intended purpose" as stated on dictionary.com. Having a successful life is not having everything you need and want. Sadly, because I think in pictures, when I first thought of success I pictured having a big house, a fancy car, and expensive clothes. Socially that is due to the media and the changes society has taken, stamping the incorrect value on life. It is as if materialistic things are more important and valuable than …show more content…
anything else. For that reason, it is hard for me to believe that "he who dies with the most toys wins." Success is not measured by the materials one obtains but rather by how you achieve something and, after you are finished you may obtain certain benefits and rewards from your success. Therefore, the quote is misleading because the person that wins when they die is the one who lives right by God. A successful life is one that lives right by God. Someone who lives their life without God dies with nothing and becomes nothing. Those who live right by God are filled with hope, faith and love. As a reward for living a successful life you encounter love and you live with hope. People who have loved in their life have accomplished something major in their life. Those who live their life with hope have learned to be true and calm when dealing with life's events. Hence, this is the reason why the person with a good hand may play horribly while someone with a poor hand plays well and becomes successful. Success by Ralph Waldo Emerson was on point about success. He defines success as having life's simplest rewards. "To laugh often and much" makes a day successful. As being capable to "respect" others, "endure the betrayal " is a success in itself. Being able to "find the best in others" and most importantly "leave the world a bit better This is to have succeeded." In theory, to have a successful life is a good thing which is not measured by materialistic things; but rather by a number of different gestures and accomplishments. Additionally and most importantly success is living fit close at hand to God. So, success in my eyes is the whole lot. Kadeish Brown
Thursday, February 2, 2006. I agree with Waldo Emerson's piece, Success. He described success as obtaining life's most down-to-earth bonus. "To laugh often and much" makes a day successful. As being capable to "respect" others, "endure the betrayal " is a success in itself. Being able to "find the best in others" and most importantly "leave the world a bit better This is to have succeeded." A lot of the times success is often accomplished through or determined by someone's occupation. When I was a little girl I wanted to be a teacher then a fashion designer or photographer and at one point a judge; all successful professions. When I asked others what they thought I'd become I received responses such as an operator, a lawyer or even a radio show host. After reviewing what I had a passion for and what I was good at, I saw an overlap. I came to the conclusion that I was going to end up somewhere in the communications field; that is where my success laid.
With communications I have a very wide variety of job opportunities. However the one that best fits me is advertising. Overall advertising is a paid for endorsement by an identified sponsor; it is also the communicating function of marketing. Its sole purpose is to attract positive attention and responses from your audience. A great advertisement grabs the attention, interest, and desire then influence action from the spectators. However, I see myself getting involved with Public Relations. According to Aaron D. Allen "PR's Life Span Is Longer Than Advertising," "PR Is Cost-Effective, Advertising is Costly," "PR Builds Credibility, Advertising Breeds Skepticism" and "PR Is Not Intrusive." There are a lot of similarities between the two industries and most importantly they involve a point of view through the mass media." Due to competitive field in advertising, I feel more comfortable and satisfied with a Public Relations job.
Barbara Nitzberg, the Manager of Media Relations and Special Projects at the College of New Rochelle is an expert on Public Relations. She has proved that having a previous background looks great however it is not imperative, because Mrs. Nitzberg received a solid degree in something she enjoyed. After being out of school for 2 years she turned away from Veterinarian to Public Relations in 1987. Due to her job she makes it a point to know what the media is on and to read and view broadcasting outlets. Regarding working with the media Mrs. Nitzberg informed me to "make sure the story fits their leaks" and most importantly "treat them with respect." Mrs. Nitzberg believes if you are not very good at communicating verbally and in writing a career in Public Relations may not be the wisest decision. It is very important to "be able to learn quickly" and to "not be afraid" and never forget that your "deadlines are essential." Therefore I believe Barbara Nitzberg is truly successful in her choice of career.
She has given me such an insight that I will be confident going into to the work field. Upon asking for advice Barbara Nitzberg informed me to "think about things you are involved in and do more communication arts related try to get hands on experience through media alerts or try press release design things think like a PR or advertising major." With that advice I am on my way to become a very successful employee. For that reason I am responsible for strengthening my weakness; from working on my grammar to reading more news. With great dedication I honestly feel I have made the correct career choice. Kadeish Brown

Michael Jackson, Thomas Jefferson, Gary Coleman, MC Hammer and Mike Tyson are extremely well known names. But, what are they knew for, are they more famous because of the talent they have illustrated or is it because they are stars gone bankrupt? It is not very important because either way one follows the other. After Mike Tyson had such a successful career while living the American dream how could such a household name turn into a penniless individual? The only logical explanation is the conclusion that, success must have gotten the worst of him.
As Professor Holden stated, "As we all know success and money do not always bring happiness" and "Success can do strange things to people." She is right on the bulls eye with such a comment. Just look at what is going on in the news from Martha Stewart, Mary-Kate Olsen, to Michael Jackson and many more. Superstars are falling from grace more and more each day. What could drive a person from the top to fall flat on their face and loose fame? Too many things from cash, drugs, cars, house, toys, and most importantly momentarily happiness causes the downfall. Popularity is actually awfully overwhelming so perhaps we as fascinators even play a hand in it; just not when it comes to Michael Gerard Tyson's situation.
As written by Sam Donnellon in the Philadelphia Daily News, " what kind of world is it when the only choice that makes sense is the one Tyson has made? Fight a pug, get $5.5 million, stay out of jail." Even though Mike Tyson made more than $300 million, in 2003 he filled for bankruptcy. He owes money to Uncle Sam, his second wife, and even Showtime. In order to say out of jail he made an arrangement, " the deal he struck with his creditors: You fight, we collect, nobody goes to jail." It is just amazing that Mike is in debt from his feet to his head yet "he is living in a $140,000 ranch house on the outskirts of Phoenix with a girlfriend and her kid." Many say "We didn't respect him then again, we gave him too much, at too young an age" and that I strongly disagree. His career choices were his responsibility; sadly he made a bad choice and blew most of his money on unimportant materials. His success and failure laid in his carelessness over his finances and one of boxing's most talented fighters was gone.
Achieving success is a very popular ambition and the target of most people. However dark times are often followed by success especially when you live in the spot light. As a result success does not always bring pleasure and causes bizarre things. Kadeish Brown Tuesday, February 7, 2006.
Tommy loves black people Just recently, I was shopping with my mother and I refused to try on or purchase any thing from Tommy.
Sine the 1990's, Tommy Hilfiger has been one of the most recognized and successful fashion designers, and as a household name he is at the top of the fashion industry. However, almost everything that goes up must come down. Sadly Tommy Hilfiger briefly fell from grace when his name is being associated with an extremely negative connotation. With his success Tommy Hilfiger gained the spot light, and reports, gossip and stories were spread. I remember telling my mother how I no longer liked or supported Tommy because he is a racist and doesn't want black people wearing his clothes. It is hard for Tommy Hilfiger's audience to separate the truth from the lies and the facts from the opinions. That's why that particular rumor had a negative affect on Tommy Hilfiger's career. However, despite everything Tommy Hilfiger is not
racist. Today it is still being believed that fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger made racist statements on Oprah Winfrey's talk show. In many emails regarding Tommy they state, " he's been accused of saying things such as If I had known that African Americans, Hispanics and Asians would buy my clothes, I would not have made them so nice' and I wish those people would not buy my clothes they were made for upper-class whites.'" Ouch! That is a very racist remark, "Summed up, he basically said that if he had known that so many china men and niggers were going to buy his clothes, he never would have made it so nice" the email goes on to say. As a result, many minorities refused and rejected anything Tommy Hilfiger because he was a "jerk." The rumor online also extends to say how "Oprah immediately asked Hilfiger to leave her show" after he made his statement. According to Urban Legends "That was in 1997. Sad to say, Hilfiger is still learning how hard it is to kill Internet rumors." From this time what started out on the internet quickly spread, and today it is frequently heard through word of mouth. This racist rumor has haunted the designer for a lot of time and as a result his sales declined. More importantly, he went on the aggressive side. What many people fail to realize, are the lies they often hear. Folklorists say, "The unfounded story has been circulating for years, with different designers' names being substituted." Coincidentally years ago an identical gossip involved Liz Claiborne for a numerous time. The scandal was fabricated; it is nothing more than a lie. In order to get the truth heard a company representative made an announcement, "The facts are simple and incontrovertible. Tommy Hilfiger did not make the alleged inappropriate racial comments. Whether these rumors are part of a misunderstanding or a deliberate act of malice, they have absolutely no basis in fact." It is impossible to answer where the rumor came from because "Hilfiger has never appeared on Oprah" and "In fact, Oprah has never even met him" Is stated on Oprah's site. For a while Tommy Hilfiger got hurt from a nasty lie. He was not the first victim of such talk and will not be the last because similar stories have been cycled for designers for many years. In conclusion word of mouth is very important because "The more you talk about these things, the more they get spread around, says O'Malley." As a celebrity you are in the center of the media and constantly talked about. Unfortunately these stories that are often being retold may very well damage a person's success. The Ninth Commandment of Moses is "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor." Yet with success sometimes comes disappointment due to untruthful tales. For that reason Tommy has regained my trust, appreciation and my preference for his products. His accusations of being a racist are not true. Therefore I recently purchased 2 pairs of Hilfiger's socks and a Tommy belt and I am proud to wear them. As a celebrity living in the public eye the truth will come out of every lie.
