Be friend with the pious people, gain knowledge and keep company of oneself with a spiritual guide (shaykh). In addition, be quick to remove the evil by asking help from a spiritual guide just as he seeks help from a doctor in curing his disease. A true guide is Gnostic (arif), who is an intelligent, a seer of the soul’s diseases, kind-hearted, admonishes other in religion, purified his own soul from evil traits. Common man do not know the way and the diseases of the soul, the reason and causes behind it and ways and techniques to subtly remove the evil, hence they are in need of guidance. Next, to restore the health of the soul and spiritual self, the substance of the vice need to be cut off and remove it permanently from oneself by taking out its sources. Only by destroying the substance of the evil, the evil soul could be cured permanently. This can only be accomplished by removing the root of evils. The evil can be removed by contradicting the causes and roots of the evil, which has been said by Imam Al-Ghazali. It is the general rule of spiritual treatment. To know is to know the nature of an evil, what is the cause, what harm could it does in this life or hereafter.
